Did a favour job today for a friend of my mother in law, just connecting up her washing machine as she has given up her council house and moved into a 1 bedroom social housing flat. When I gets there the poor woman is stressed out as the boiler (combi) isn't working and a guy came out and couldn't sort what the problem was and another guy was due out today, anyway I start plumbing in the WM and the heating guy turns up (looks like he has only just reached puberty  ) . I'm talking to the old girl and this lad is fucking about scratching his head and comes up to the lady and says there's a problem no gas is coming into the property, I said to him it is coming into the property it is just no one has turned it on where it comes in under the sink next to the water main. thats because a lot of them work for fuck all, they take ' new starters' who've done a course but know nothing and they give them sevicing, take the cover off, make a rattle and bang, put the cover back on and go to the next, the fault finding they give to the more experianced, So the new lads learn nothing just work cheap, but they're happy cos they get a van and they hope things will get better,

A lot of kids just don't stop & think. It's a mad panic & on their phones or on-line. I get phone calls all the time from the young team, 9 times out of 10 they're telling me the solution as they speak. Put these fucking phones in the bin & start thinking, twats!!!

Mind I do find those smart phone fantastic if you want a data sheet or an operation manual for a plumbing product or an electrical job etc. The one that makes me laugh the most with the youth of today is photography, they take photos of all the wrong items, they've got photo's of how they look at work today, what they've had to eat, what they've noticed when they should be working, the list is endless! Now this was one I got last Friday for an industrial roller shutter at a family business of an domestic electrical contracting firm. Basically there was a fault with there existing stores door controller (three phase reversing starter assembly type) was intermittently working so the owner thought it should be repaired by his son, so he left him to it last Monday. Now the owner being of the thinking it's just simple exchange (old out new in) what could go wrong. Well the young son had spent four days trying every possible combination of wiring permutations possible and couldn't get it working and the father just looked at it and says not the type of work he understands, so I got the job. Now the first thing I asked the son was - can I have a look at the photos of the original wiring to speed the job up, and his reply was "I didn't bother cause they where all the same colour"! I couldn't believe it, I said "yes they may be all the same colour but they've all got different numbers on". Anyway it increased my time on the job and the price charged but yes there not of the same school I went too, in fact I couldn't have one there worse than children! |

I'd been working on the council house refurbs at the time. Can't remember if I worked in that particular house. Apparently they let the apprentice plumb the gas into the house. Stupid boy never sleeved the pipe where it went through the cavity wall. (gas tight on installation) Later on an electrician damaged the pipe whilst putting the main earth wire through the wall to the outside. A month later and enough gas had built up in the cavity wall to bring down the house. H&S involved in the inquiry and the company lost their contract with the council. A few years later, they re-gained the contract with the council. (A council executive officers son worked for the plumbing company (surprise, surprise) Fookin idiots though. Some years later I was again working on council house re-furbishments and they were plumbing a house up and one of the plumbers had left an uncapped pipe behind the bloody kitchen units. Twas only when he turned the gas on that we smelt it before another explosion. Had to take the newly installed kitchen out again for the fuckers. smiley-face-shaking-fist |
