Ive been away from plumbing a long time( just Been on gas only) however Iโm now doing both, All the tips on here have been great by all ๐my tip Iโve just started doing ,is when refitting a close coupled cistern, a nice blob of grease on the metal/rubber washer , will hold it in place on the thread handsfree . and make it a lot easier to get wing nut on when in a tight spot, the beauty of this is , it will prevent rusting up aswell for when you swap the syphon again in couple of years, win win Good one that

Itโs wise to put some silicone on these washers & tighten up the nut/bolt. Itโll never be a problem for maintenance, they are never removed again.

much easier to expand the chrome pipe rather than scratch the chrome off ready for soldering ๐๐ผ The best tips are simple but easily missed so well spotted Endfeed.

I've got one, when fitting a bar mixer fast fix kit and you are using the nasty threaded male irons you can barely get your spanner on, first tighten a normal 15mm comp nut on to properly seat the olive (obviously while holding the backplate with grips) then jointing compound and then you can fit male iron. Sometimes they are not strong enough to seal the olive and can seep back into the wall.
Chuck the hard red fibre washers and use the thicker 3/4 filter washers from BES.

hello and welcome wetfinger, thats a good tip, those stupid fittings are hard to get a purchase on the slotted nuts/adaptors, I've struggled a few times especially it the pipes not coming through the wall square,
good tip mate thanks,

I'm honoured thanks Tom, i fit them all the time but a few years ago on a shower I could get behind the stud wall and saw a drip from the back and thought WTF, the nut was as tight as it would go but the olive could easily be rotated with grips.
