Hello Friends
So this morning I had a ds cloakroom basin tap change. Ok. I can do that.
Got to house, in cloakroom no ballofix. Looked in airing cupboard hwsc, no gate valves, ok look in loft, loads of gate valves from cwsc, everything must be tank fed, nothing labelled but ok I'll turn the all off. One wouldn't budge the others turned.
Back downstairs, test taps, still running a bit, up in loft again, won't turn off any further. Back down stairs, decision time. Ok, I'll do it. Got everything around me.
Cold tap off, finger over end of pipe, all ok, bit fiddly to get new tap backnut on but did it & connected up. All ok. Little bit wet.
Hot, undid backnut as much as possible & undid tap connector, water running, then red hot, burning, ffs, couldn't get tap back but on, hot water & room flooding now, it's ok as downstairs with Lino, mop by my side.
Eventually got it on & connected. No leaks. Customers happy.
Now they want new kitchen tap fitted but again no ISO & I can't do it like I did as I got soaked, the room was soaked & it was scorching hot water.
So, custards are happy to fit ballofix all over house & change all the gate valves in the loft that come off the cwsc.
Now, my confidence is flagging as I write this.
Can anyone confirm what I'm thinking please?
Drain down & change gate valves then fit ballofix on other pipes for future, refill, change kitchen tap & test other outlets.
Thanks all
Rct

I don't know if I'd bother with the gate valves to be honest, they're only decoration after a couple of years anyway. I don't touch the buggers unless I absolutely have to. You were lucky only one was seized and none of the others leaked or sheared off I'd drain down and put decent ISO's on all the feeds to sinks, bogs etc. Job done.

those lever valves work good instead of gate vales, gate valves are like any thing you buy,,cheapo's fuck up after a while but if you pay the extra and get peglar or conex or yorkshire they'll last longer,

Cheers. It's disturbing for my confidence again
Ballofix on all outlets is the way to go I think. If the custard wants new gate or lever valves then I'll do it with decent make as Tom said. I now only use wras approved billofix & compared to the cheaper ones I think they seal so much easier.
How about airlocks when I refill? What are the chances?

If it airlocks then it airlocks, hard to predict. You can tell your confidence has been dented a little, you're fearing the worst. Don't fret. An airlock isn't your fault, doesn't matter if it was you, me, Tom, Endfeed anyone, we'd all refill the system in the same way. Short bursts from cold to hot either by covering a mixer or linking hot/cold taps with a bit of pipe will see it right. I've actually not had an airlock for ages (tempting fate here!), it's a pain in the arse when it happens, but it's the original installers fault, not yours and often only takes a few minutes to sort out.

Had similar problem round mine the other week, changing basin taps in both bathrooms. I've got ballo's on everything but they're all scaled to fuck, and wouldn't turn, i don't have to tell you that all the gate valves don't work either. Couldn't even be bothered to drain it down just opened kitchen tap and cloakroom tap and snatched new ones on. Awkward cos' they was all on rigid,no flexi's, mixer as well. As long as you're quick and towel up you're alright. Wouldn't recommed it if you aint that confident though. You could always bung it and change em.

If you change the gate valves for lever valves rocky make sure they are full bore mate, if you drain down and get an airlock on refill then as above or if you have a wet vac suck it through piece of piss job done, or bung the tank mate.

I don't mind getting a little bit wet from time to time Rocky, but always draw the line nowadays at getting scalded!!
Back in the days of solid fuel central heating and scalding hot water and bonus pay..........
As a popular dodge I would attempt was to change the tap top live on the hot water (eliminating the need for draining down or emptying the airing cupboard looking for the gate valve) to earn extra bonus £££££).
However, the name of the game really was "can you get the old tap top off and the new one fitted before the scalding hot water arrives at the tap you are working on" (in the dead leg time)?
Nightmare..... "On no, the jumpers stuck! Long nose pliers! Quick, quick ! AAARRGGGH !!! "
Thank goodness for modern combi boliers eh!

Wet was ok. It was the scorching hot tap I didn't like, it was do or die!
