Its more important to wrap into the thread so when you wind in its eating into the thread and not winding out, if the rad tail is in your left hand and pointing to you, wrap it clockwise, I think i'll do a vid on this,,, bounce Cant wait for the vid tom..please,please it like wating for santa to come....

I'm looking for a 3/8th socket that'll fit these square rad valve tails. Monument do them but I think they're about a tenner each & not available for socket ratchet sizes. Tight arse Jocks don't spend a tenner on sockets!! I use a 16mm Spark Plug socket for hez. Rad valve tails, if it's any help to anyone.

I used to have a ring spanner for bobin' those rad tails super quick when I was doing a lot of CH work ...it was the dogs bollocks. I reckon "Superplumb" nicked it off me because it was the only thing that I could do faster than he could. One here on ebay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ring-spanner-King-Dick-double-ended-cranked-vintage-garage-find-5-16-3-8-/282239969262?hash=item41b6d027ee:g:WVMAAOSwcLxYF5fR I think you'll like it Dick, it's a "King Dick". one

Is a whitworth spanner required for square nuts?? I guess an eight point socket would do?? Or an 8 point ratchet spanner?? Thanks CF.

The offset on the ring spanner meant that you could go round and round in full circles (once you'd knocked the cone and nut off the tail), it would never slip off.
These days my days of CH bashing are over, but I'll have a look/search in the van today and see if I've got a spanner of rad tail size.

5/8" open end fitted the rad tail Dick, although it was just a little bit on the slack side. Whilst a 17mm socket fitted it tight, it even needed a push on. I would think 17mm for the ring spanner would also be the correct size, though it maybe a better idea to take the tail with you to a bric a brac market and try it in a few ring spanners before buying. I don't think that I will ever bother buying another though because I hardly ever get a large volume of radiators to tail up nowadays. If you want tail up a lot of radiators quickly though... then the ring spanner would be my choice. Attachment Deleted

Thanks CF. I know 17mm fit some but not all square tails. I currently use a 3/8" ratchet or 17mm ratchet spanner.
I want to try an impulse driver, so sockets would be preferred.
I normally 'top & tail' my radiators when they're hung on the wall & have used ratchets or ratchet spanners for some time. 22mm socket for plug & air valve, 16mm spark plug socket for hex Danfoss type tails.

Interesting stuff there Dick a couple of ideas that I'd never thought of.
If top and tailing rad's in situ' then the ratchet is the way to go.
You need the rad between your legs to get going with the ring spanner idea.
If you cut the top off the radiator packing and then pull it off in one... you've got a nice little bag for your rubbish!
