If there was one piece of advice that I could pass back in time for myself it would be not to do jobs for free or on the cheap; you've got to remember plumbing is you and your families livelihood.
If you do work cheaply in no time at all you will have a never ending stream of jobs that people will expect you to do for "Ten bob and a rabbit"! It's very difficult to break out of this circle once you drop in it.
I would charge the normal hourly rate (whatever that is).
Tappy,

I charge £50 off and back on, If its local, I do't get many small rads as they'll have a go themselves when i tell the price, but they can't handle the big ones,

That sounds about the right price to me tom.
Although, with a radiator that is larger than my own arm spam I would ask for some help with the lift.

I take the grills off and use the welded cross pieces as handles, I also blank the valve tails so that no water leaks out, I've lifted 2 mtr type 22 rads like this, Even though it says on the tin, " this is a 2 man job to lift", ,,, that's why we're all fucked at 55,

A few years ago I was working with another plumber (for the same firm) when his phone rang.
It was someone he knew who's toilet wasn't flushing, after establishing it was the syphon that needed replacing the conversation went something like this.
"A syphon will set you back around the £40.00 mark, then we'll need a new syphon kit they cost £10.00 so that's £50 but that doesn't include my labour or travel cost. Where do you live? Mmmm that's about 1/2hrs drive away...we'll say £90.00 all in is that alright?
I'm thinking £90.00 for a ruddy syphon!!!!! This is were I've gone wrong!

Whats it like out there?is there always plenty of work? I've always managed to work for somebody since I was 16 EF. My first Boss had a saying "show me a business man and I'll show you a poorly man" The poor bugger was dead 4 years later. So no, I wouldn't recommend working for yourself although I've never tried it. If I got finished I would do something else. From the plumbers I know who've tried working for themselves the problem always seems to be the same one of "getting the money in"!

each to his own,I've mostly been self employed from about 1984, I've worked 'cards in' as well but enjoy the freedom of self employment, If i don't like a job, i won't do it, Like crowsfoot says, the biggest drawback is none payers, I've worked all my life and I've a house to show for it, thats all really, i've no big savings or good pension to carry me though the winter of my life, but if i had to go through life again, I would't change anything,

Self employed is the way to go if you can earn a living or more.
I'm going contracting from Monday but I won't burn my bridges until I know it's ok.
