I grew up on site work and loved it untill the safety got serious about the late eighties, I put up with it for a while until I got sick of, " you can't do this, you can't do that, you can't park there, sign in ,sign out, another site safety meeting,"! It all got in the way of working, A ten minute job became 1/2 a day job but you could't price it any higher, so I said, fuck this, I'm offski,
So domestics came the bread and butter, smiley-finger005

I still do both domestic and site work and a small amount of light commercial jobs,,,I agree with Tom about the site work its become ridiculous what with risk assessments, tickets for your ladders & steps, induction meetings on health & safety and 50% of the work force are eastern European so don't understand a word of the induction anyway. I like all the work really but I don't do bathroom refurbs anymore as the customers tend to buy so much shit I can't be arsed with it,,,fucking wall hung toilets,,,bath taps you can't get to later on,,,shitty shower enclosures made from compressed tin foil,,,they buy it online for £3 and its only when you come to install it you find half the bits are missing and they contact the supplier and its going to be sent out ASAP (3 days later). If I've ever shit out on jobs its always been bathroom refurbs. having stopped doing them my work load is still as full on,,,I should of stopped doing them yrs ago. I do quite a few extension jobs for builders and I enjoy doing the 1st & 2nd fix on them, they are always good lads and generally very well organized.

I started out installing CH which I enjoyed, the pace of it though was frantic and you had no time to spit. I still think (?) I would enjoy it, but I have to face up to it at my age I wouldn't last the pace and if I had carried on I'm sure I would be "totally fucked" by now!
Maintenance is what I do now and I enjoy the slower pace of things and solving weird things like Fridays "mystery leak into flat below" which do take up a lot of your time.
Unvented/air source is something new - that I'm kind of enjoying.

It all got in the way of working, A ten minute job became 1/2 a day job but you could't price it any higher, so I said, fuck this, I'm offski, So domestics came the bread and butter, smiley-finger005 I remember my brother (a plasterer) going to a repair job at British Celanese, here in Derby. His job was to board and skim a doorway between two rooms (both sides) When he arrived, he was told he'd have to attend a site safety induction, lasting a few hours. Phoned his gaffer who spoke to the people at BC. Yep go ahead with it, they're paying for the job and we'll pay you day rate. So he spends two hours watching a couple of videos, answering a few question sheets. He's then shown to the rooms where he's to board and skim the opening. By lunch time he's framed it out and boarded one side. He went and found someone to ask how he now gets to the other side of the doorway so he can board that up. Some jumped up manager comes down and tells him. Now that this side is boarded up, the other side is now in a different part of the site and you'll have to come back tomorrow to do another site induction for that side. (bro didn't want to skim one side before boarding the other as it could potentially knock the skim off the first side when boarding the other) Asks if he could do the site induction straight away.. No, site inductions are held once a day in the morning. So brother went home. Came back the next day, did almost exactly the same site induction. Boarded the other side, skimmed it , then found his way back to the first side and skimmed that. What he reckoned was a job likely to last a few hours, turned out to be a day and a half. And that my friends is modern Health and Safety in the workplace.
