you're right there rocky, never buy silvershite, but i mean the fittings are all a few pence cheaper, not worth a long trip but if they are on the doorstep, a penny saved, is a penny earned,

Screwfix endfeed fittings are shite.

a wire is a wire, I can't see how there can be differances, unless its an old cotton covered copper wire, then its good stuff, not like todays plastic covered silver foil,

We've got a Screwfix and a Toolstation pretty much next door to each other in Bolton, I use Toolstation more because they're cheaper for most things. I do buy my elec showers from poofix if poss, the Triton Enrich 8.5kw for £50(same shower in B&Q but called 'Cara' also £50 with a trade card), dead easy to fit with multiple entry points for water/elec. Oh and those brass shanked fill valves Tom introduced to us for a fiver. I tend to go there for things like taps too. But for every day top ups though like ISO's, endfeed fittings, traps, waste and fittings, flush valves, pushfit etc. always Toolstation. Silicone is £2 at Toolstation and I've never had issues with it, it forms really nicely for a good few minutes too. I use an independant merchant for shower enclosures/baths/loos/sinks/vanity stuff etc. Decent prices and they deliver for free. Any problems you talk to the boss, you don't get that with the sheds. I'd love to buy everything from the merchants, but they just can't compete on price for most stuff.
Got to agree with the comments about silverline stuff, it's proper shite.

20 years ago the best place in Wigan was a indie called JKS, All the plumbers in Wigan went there, cheap prices, well stocked and good service, We were 5 deep at the counter most mornings but they coped and everyone got served fast, Then builderbase bought them out, the prices rocketed, the srvice was abismal and they cut our credit limits, Most plumbers moved to other merchants, Today they've still not improved their service, you can be in there half an hour just to get an item because you're in the area and its quicker to buy there, I don't know how they survive, So now screwfix and toolstation are attractive because of price and you can order online or over the fone and they have MOST things in store, oh yeah, and they do liver,

A Toolstation employee once told me that the owner of Toolstation is the same person who started Screwfix which he sold off to the kingfisher (?) group (for a heck of a lot of money), he then formed a brand new rival company "Toolstation"!
You quite often get a Screwfix and Toolstation in close proximity, so it could be true.
Having a Toolstation close by will give you more choice and could help keep costs down in the long run.

They opened a Toolstation 10min from me & it's dead handy. The staff are friendly & helpful, the only thing is it's never that busy & it's a big branch. I hope they don't close it after a few months.

The other thing i like about Toolstation is you can buy a lot of bits in the quantities you need rather than at poofix where its packs of 10.

Another vote for Toolstation. 9 times out of 10, their stuff is cheaper than Screwfix, and as said, you don't always have to buy a bag of ten when you only want one or two. My local one in Bristol was one of the first of their branches, and is always busy. It's in a busy area with limited on-street parking, but because it's in an old petrol station, there's free parking on the large forecourt.
Another big bonus is free next day delivery for orders over £10 - it's over 50 quid at S/fix. Great if you're not in a hurry for whatever you want, and saves the aggro of driving down there. Usually find that Toolstation has what I need in stock. Shame I can't say the same about S/fix. Always use Toolstation over S/fix if I can.
Also, can't find the post about the fill valve for a fiver. Anyone got a link, please.
