I'm just about to quote on my first unvented installation despite getting my ticket over a year ago! I've sketched out the current set up and how I think the new layout would be after installation and I'd be grateful for any feedback. It's a pretty big house that's being renovated with three floors and probably will have five bathrooms(!) including two ensuites in the converted loft space. Attachment DeletedI've no idea on which brands would be considered good quality and have just looked in the Screwfix catalogue to start with. The picture below is the type of thing I'm looking at: Attachment DeletedI have some pretty basic questions: What's the pump on the cylinder for? The boiler (Valliant eco tec plus 630) has an integrated pump that would push the primary flow through the coil. Is a secondary return necessary? Am I going to be out of my depth? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about a secondary return unless its a massive house and if you do add one you might need to oversize the expansion vessel to accommodate the extra water in the return but that would only be if the secondary return was on a big scale.

I don't understand that statement PB "its a Y plan system you'll need to use the port valve that comes with the cylinder because the Y plan is an open port". so is that the original cylinder as the new cylinder kit says only supplied with two port valve?

If you are installing an unvented cylinder in place of a vented cylinder and the system is a Y plan set up G3 regs are that the unvented cylinder needs complete shut off and that's is why they come with a 2 port valve in the kit.

It’s currently set up as an S plan with the main distribution pipework in 28mm.
So I presume I wouldn’t need the pump that’s on the pre-plumbed version.
The 2 port valve for the DHW is currently right by the boiler so I guess I could keep that and pipe directly to the new cylinder primary loop.
How do you calculate the size of the expansion vessel needed?
Thanks for the advice so far.

The expansion vessel is already sized and comes with the cylinder, you don't need the pump just use the existing one mate.

Thanks, PB. Any brands that you'd recommend or avoid?

Thanks, PB. Any brands that you'd recommend or avoid? They are all much of a much mate, they have to meet such a high standard because of the nature of what they are so there's no real bad ones, I like the RM ones.

Great - I'll put my price together based on the 300l RM cylinder then. I reckon 3 days to do the work including taking out the old cylinder, CWS tank and redundant pipework (the old cylinder is on the first floor, the new going on the ground floor next to the boiler). Looks like it will be around £1400 - £1500 all in. Does that sound about right to you?

Cheers, Arfur. They look neat but I wonder if that makes them harder to work on? I'll check them out.

I've installed loads of RM cylinders and never had any problems with them mate, price sounds more than fair to me but bare in mind that sometimes converting to mains pressure you can get leaks in old pipework, taps and toilet fill valves sometimes don't cope well so put in your quote that any problems that arise are extras.

Cheers, Arfur. They look neat but I wonder if that makes them harder to work on? I'll check them out. They do look compact but the PDF in the original link even makes it look sweeter as an install possibility if the location allows top access for any future repairs.
