thats strange astra ? so if for instance you turn on a hot tap in the bath, no hot water comes out of the tap but, it overflows from the expansion pipe , is that what you're saying, ponder

That doesn't make any sense to me, if there was water coming from the expansion when all taps closed yes, but not the other way round. When a tap is open the easiest route for the water would be out of the tap, not all the way up to the loft, very weird. Is the hot water side on a pump?

Could it not be the boiler is running to satisfy the hot water tanks needs and its expansion out of the vent he means?

Hi Guy's only seems to happen when a hot tap is turned on water still comes out off hot tap as well ponder
I asked how old the boiler was they said just about 3 yrs old , I suggested they better get the guy
who fitted it, to come back and take a gander as I am not Gas registered
But I thought I would ask you guy's and the wealth of knowledge on here, someone might to able to
tell me what is going on as I personally don't think its to do with the boiler, so that would mean I can
then fix the problem myself ...............( Valliant Boiler )

I agree that its not the boiler, I can only suggest that its got a whole house pump running and the pipework is resticking its perfomance, so its dumping through the vent,

Water in tank was warm !!!! How high is the vent crook over the tank ? Sounds like the domestic hot water is being over heated and the vent is too shallow.and when the hot taps are open and shut the imbalance is noticed. Certainly nothing to do with the boiler.

Hi Rocket sorry no pics
Tom No Pump in the house
Pb It could be that the height of the expansion pipe is not high enough but the tank is right up against slope of the roof
very very tight and this installation has been there for years ,,, but they might have had this problem for years as well
and just so happens that i had to be there in the loft as the hot tap was turned and I saw the result....who knows smiley-sad056 nay

second thoughts, the hot water draw off is not being taken off the top of cylinder, maybe off the cold feed, so when the tap is run, its forming a syphon, in the vent, I've never seen this and its a complete shot in the dark but its the only way i can see this happening,

Could be an old type mixer tap and mains cold pushing back hot water up through the vent when the tap is in cross over position.

Make sure no hot water booster pump or shower pump has been fitted incorrectly Astra?

Sounds like a magic water act Astra ! PBs idea that the water is mixing through an old fashioned mixer tap is logical. However, it still needs the heat exchanger (coil) inside the cylinder to be perforated (common fault) to allow the mains pressure from the faulty mixer tap to be transferred to the heating system then up the expansion pipe into the header tank when the tap is opened. The water from the expansion pipe would also be very hot. A common symptom of a faulty cylinder coil is a persistant overflow from the lowest feed tank and you originally went to the faulty overflow? The pieces do fit, I don't think even I wouldn't have got all this in just one visit though! Good one this Astra.

Hi Guy's phoned the custard today they told me that they were waiting for the guy who fitted the boiler to
contact them as they spent alot of money with him and at present did not want anyone else taking a look at
present and hoped I understood what they were saying,,, so I kept my / this forums thoughts to myself
and not probably help anyone else that they might ask to fix problem .........
