the first ever fanned flued boiler was a serento, a bitch to service because the fan was running all the time, it was critcal to have the right balance in the flue because the pilot was constant and thermacouple supervised, if the was a slight leak in the case or a pin hole in the flu, the pilot went out, and a service was crucial with them because a spiders web would put the pilot out, We all hated the serento, but it was the forerunner of all modern boilers,

the very first systems they did had no header tank, It had a Grecian urn in the corner of a bedroom wall mounted as high as possible, At the service it was the engineers job to top it up, Very often it would dry up between services and most customers would top it up them selves, a tip for them was, Put a rubber duck in the urn, when you cannot see it any more, top the urn up with a jug of water, Servowarm warned us not to give this tip, as they charged £35 call out to do it, in 1969 £35 was a Kings ransom, they were ruthless,

Around the same time the big outfit in Scotland was a Cumbernauld outfit called ‘FEP’, they were massive, all over the place. ’Sidewinder’ in the cylinder, 15mm Flow to the sidewinder & 8mm return. 8mm to all radiators & drop fed in trunking, it was chucked in like spaghetti. Low Water content balanced flue boilers, they bought everything direct from the manufacturers & must of been turning over huge amounts. They even had a Franchise on the go.
It was an eye opener for us back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Squads of two doing full installs in a day, fast as fuck - they had all the tools, circular saws, jig saws etc. The fitters were making a fortune!!
Back then of course it was like the Klondike, working 7 days a week. Boom times!!

Wonder what the quality was like. Also can imagine all that 8 milli full of shite and blocked few years down the line - before any inhibitors or magic filters.

another thing about Servowarm, they never did microbore, it was always 15mm copper untill the copper shortage, then they used a 15mm iron pipe, which was a basterd, it rotted after a few years so needed replaceing with copper ( another money spinner) for them, and they also used Servoguard, that was their own brand of inhibitor and they charged for it at a service, it formed a jelly like substance in the header tank which needed cleaning, which was charged for too, So a £35 service ended up like this
Service £35 servo guard £7 clean tank £15 theracouple £15
Total £72.00
and that was typical in 1990's when £72 was a third of a blokes wages, no wonder folks stopped having services,

But like everywhere, it’s down to the individual. Get a good install working system going, you can do a neat, fast job. The Edinburgh Servowarm one I was on at the weekend, was fairly neat & tidy. Unusual pipe clips, neither my mate or I have ever seen before??
