Hi guys My external mains brass stop cock gave up the ghost today while attempting to close it, rather than it get tight, it just kept spinning, I never put any excessive force on it my heart skipped a beat when I realised it could of shut my water off but I wouldn't be able to turn it back on again, but luckily it never shut it down I don't have a mains stop cock in the house and the outside one is in my front garden and it only shuts my property down, it's probably on a lead line too whats my options guys i don't have a water meter by the way so I can't use that for isolation thanks for any advice guys willo smiley-sad056 nay

Is it on your property?
If it is shut water off in street & change it
If it's outside your boundaries get water board in
Simple.

Is that picture the external mains stopcock? Stupid place to have it I'd say. For starters there's no protection from frost.. What stops it freezing in winter? What stops the local yobs coming on to your garden at night and turning it off? (apart from the fact that it now can't turn off)

No jj the pic is a job I got sent to to correct. Contractors had fitted an air line right in front of another one making it unusable The guy who was in control of the contractors got the sack for not checking it before they left site

If you have room to fit a stopcock in the house wilo I would get yourself a cheap freeze kit and freeze the pipe and fit the stopcock.

Great idea plumber boy, i never thought of that, what's freezing like on mains? someone in pub last night suggested getting a water meter fitted he has just had on fitted and it's before his main stopcock in the front garden he says i could then isolate at the meter and repair at my leisure, by not having other people with no water on any thoughts on this lads?? or was it the beer talking?? v7Nrn0bofCK1_uIY9I4a beer

Usually the water undertaker would fit the water meter outside your boundary.

thats a good idea willo, Its worth a try, they certainly put valves either side to make it serviceable so you're going to get stoptap on eitherway, Its true some areas put them outside and even if they put it out side they still put a tap on, So when its done you can shut if off and put a tap inside,
buy that bloke in't pub a pint, smiley-eatdrink009drinking

All the houses down my street with meters have the meter in there gardens took the dog for a walk this morning and checked them out they appear to be fitted before the stop cock as said my local supplier is Yorkshire water im liking the freezing idea just to get a stop cock in my house though not sure if having the water meter would save me any money though even so I can get it fitted free then tell them to remove it free a year later if I wanted to be cheeky a mates even suggested taking out the home plumbing cover for a year that's cheap for the first year then giving them a call before the years out to say my stopcock won't work any thoughts

Remember that everything inside your boundaries are yours to service & replace if necessary. My meter & stopcock is outside my garden ?

I'd be better off without one I think comparing with others bills!!

Our water meter is in our house. In a cupboard where our stopcock is. There's also the main stopcock outside (next to the garden) should we ever need the water off completely. At least with the water meter we only pay for the water we use. Years ago I lived in a block of flats and paid the water rates to Severn Trent. A three bed house over the road paid less in water rates, than I did in a one bedroom flat. Totally unfair as Severn Trent were charging 6 lots of people for the water draining off the roof area (even though I argued that, living on the ground floor, I didn't actually have a roof)
