not being a plumber I'm a bit confused over the lead free solder issue,I'm currently doing some alterations in the bathroom and I have altered the sink hot & cold (mains fed)and used one 15mm end feed 90% on each but I don't have any lead free so used regular solder. The rest of the house which is 20+ years old is (probably) done in lead solder so were do I stand ?
The other thing is do Yorkshire fittings use leaded solder ? if so how does that work ?
lastly I intend to get some lead free but it seems to be 50% dearer than normal solder is that right ? so wheres the best/cheapest place to get some

My understanding is you shouldn’t be using leaded solder on potable water fittings.
I don’t know anyone who uses leaded solder these days.

I haven't seen any leaded solder for a long time either. It runs much nicer than lead free though. I wouldn't have thought that anyone could die of lead poisoning from using leaded solder on fittings so don't worry about it! NB... Google "copper poisoning" (that's one awaiting the snowflakes to find out about) Tappy,

leaded solder is available at srewfix, toolstation and many other places its half the price of lead free and as tappy says, it runs quicker www.toolstation.com/plumbing-solder/p45610?searchstr=roll%20of%20solder It makes sense to use it on heating and gas and use lead free on potable fittings. I don't know what the fuss is about though, we drank from lead pipes for hundreds of years, but the law is as ass the law, The chances of you ever getting caught using lead solder is about the same as, a snowballs chance in Hell. and the risk of giving someone lead poisoning even greater than that, When I worked on council refurbs , there would always be a clerk of works who has fuck all to do each day only pick faults, he would say. Don't keep the solders together, because you might ( and probably will) use leaded instead of going for more unleaded, and he would''t know unless he saw you use it, There is a way to test, but they never supplied him with a test kit,

My grandmother used to say a bit of lead was good for the constitution. Ok I made that up but it was the sought of thing she would say! Come on as Tom says, people used to drink from entire lengths of lead pipe. Compare that to a tiny amount of lead at the fittings. Having said that, I've got a roll of each and use them when you're supposed to coz I'm english so I just follow the rules and grumble about them.....

thanks for the reply's,I appreciate lead can be harmful in the long run and I will get some lead free solder but as I say the rest of the house pipe is done in it so what to do - funny enough my daughters house c1930s has a length of lead mains pipe still in use and as its embedded in the wall right through the house they don't seem too concerned about having it changed.
to answer my own question about yorkshire fittings it says on their site
THE YORKSHIRE INTEGRAL SOLDER
RING JOINT
During the manufacture of these
precision-made fittings, a ring of high
quality lead-free solder is positioned in
each capillary socket.
oh one last question is the flux required different ? thanks Howie

Because touching copper every day kills every bug or virus. Ive got to say, it appears to have held water( pun!) as a theory. The only colds Ive ever had is when havnt touched copper for couple of days! I remember hospitals were going to fit copper door knobs to every ward. Never knew if they did it in the end though.

You’ll get arrested by the Lead Police & shot at dawn for that!! This fucking country is bonkers, who the fuck cares!! For starters, what happens when you draw fresh water from a tap, now this is the only water in the home a person will consume, you let the tap run for a while. Now all the stagnant water that was in the small copper pipe will flow down the drain, then you’ll fill your kettle to boil(sterilise the water) & make the tea. Tap water in the UK tastes so shit, nobody drinks it either. Now, if the solder is full fat Lead say, how little of the fittings solder will come in contact with the actual water anyway??!! My Granny died unexpectedly at 101, smoked 40 fags a day, drank Whisky & cheap South African Sherry, but you know what; the family are sure it was the Lead water pipes that ended her short life. I’ve never known anyone with Lead Poisoning from drinking water from Lead Pipes. I’ve had Lead Poisoning from Lead Burning roofing flashing in an on-Site container.

Several brands were available.... VP, Elderado.......etc etc. There was even a product called Scotmac, which was whisky mixed with Sherry.
