Dick I've got a gap in my mind, its called, " the missing link" It can't explain to me why anyone would pay ££££££SS for a gadjet and then Pay another ££££££S for the boiler to understand how the gadjet works when as you say, a simple ' on/off' switch does the same job for a few bob, It just doest compute , Total Madness but proof , that with the right training, you can sell sand to Arabs,

Of course it’s ‘Up Selling’ Tom & business, as you know, is providing a service, gaining a good reputation & making money - lots & lots of money!!💷💷💷💷💷
However, with a standard Wireless Programmable Room Thermostat, it can easily be wired as Open Therm. These are under 50 quid for a controller for a Combi.
I can buy a Vokera Easiheat Combi for £450 complete & connect it onto Open Therm. Guarantee it’ll save 20-30% on your Gas Bill every year👍👍

To my mind "open therm" is just rehashing the old as the hills argument of having a time clock and setting it using the on/off periods hence making the boiler kick in from cold starts and high fuel consumption then having periods of no fuel consumption at all. Human beings are very poor judges of temperature, fact. A thermostat is a accurate judge of what temperature it is. If a room is too hot and it registers in the human brain that it's too hot the room has been too hot for over half an hour, it's just taken the human brain this long for the high temperature to register in it. The same for coldness "Brr it's gone cold in here" turn the heating back on quick. Versus... The leaving the heating on low all the time without any time control at all and just relying on thermostats to keep the house heating at a required comfort level so the boiler hardly ever as to start from a stone cold position? Open Therm? I don't personally think that a perfect modulating temperature control called "open therm" will really be that compatible with something that isn't? No doubt we'll be giving it a really good try though ! I work a lot in the social housing sector a lot and a lot of air source units have been fitted in these properties because they work out cheaper that all the other fuels! However, they still have to have the money in the first place to leave it on an "open therm" setting just to achieve a homes set comfort levels of heat in other words you have to be in a position to spend it before you can save it. Many people just want something to switch on for half an hour to get a warm off then turn it off again. I personally like to be in control of my own temperature setting "Brr it's just gone cold in here luv, turn the roomstat up a bit" !

I was conditioned early in my life by the forces of a violent Mother, Of course it was long before heating had been invented and making a coal fire was the only form of heating, We was not allowed to make a fire just for keeping warm, A fire was needed to cook and if there was no coal left because we'd used it, 'just to keep warm' she's beat the holy shite out of us, " If you want to get warm get off your backside and go for a run" she would say, Keeping warm was a waste of coal and not essential,

Not central heating in our Council house back in the day. The bedrooms were fucking freezing & you put old coats over the Bedcovers in the Winter, ice inside the windows when woke up in the morning. All huddled around the one fire in the Livingroom. Piss pot poor we were, but we didn’t know it. Our Mother was very strict, but we were loved & always had food. No, these modern innovations are for the Snowflakes, the generation that are always cold.

There’s no On & Off only differing temperatures at different times CF. Id never have the CH on when there’s no one at home!! Open Therm is not suitable for every home, big draughty old houses, you can forget it - farting at thunder!!

Nothing to stop you and I think technically doing anything that involves taking the cover off is not allowed when being done as a paid for service. You can do whatever you want in your own home and because its your boiler you'll care a lot more about it than some bloke from the yellow pages who also cuts out stud walls and joists when he installs bath tubs because the customer won't see it or understand. Christ!! Do some hairy arsed Handyman do that fitting a Boiler??!!!! Son, you can do what you like, if you take out the entire Street with a gas leak, fill yer boots!! If you kill your entire family with a Co leak, fill your boots!!! But an experienced, time served Gas Safe artisan will only cost you £80-100/hour.......What price do you put on your safety & the safety of your loved ones???!! If you DaftyDIY Gas work, clearly not much!!! At least you can smell gas and you can detect CO. Sparks work is far more dangerous as a live wire looks identical to a dead one and yet its allowed in many, many cases. Reason is they don't have a money making body like gassafe scaring everyone. Their prices are reasonable and my mate pays about £350 per year all in. The qualified electricians aren't afraid to explain their trade as they are proud of it. They know some DIYers are going to try it so at least they provide the info to keep them as safe as possible doing it. GasSafe meanwhile encourages the engineers to say nothing which leads to dangerous installs. As for Opentherm its a software communications protocol - something I do know something about as was a software/network/security engineer most of my working life. Its allows a customer to buy a boiler from one manufacturer and get an app or buy a controller from another - as long as they are both Opentherm. As the protocol is a standard that all opentherm manufacturers can design to. You can have temperature modulation with or without that and the two shouldn't be confused. Lets hope they make it so you need a (very, very expensive) certificate from CISCO to install such a system to keep out .....

We are the most qualified & highest paid of any trade. Any Sparks & Network guys I’ve ever worked with have been Fudge Packers!!
