do you get to do commercial work,pb? Lot of my work is commercial now, with unvented system on secondary h/w, majority of the time there's isolation valves but they always leak and I end up freezing the pipe to change them. What approach would you take? Shut secondary pumps off switch off mains and drain down? In the past I have done commercial work endfeed (still do some light commercial) and the good thing with commercial work is the plant rooms are normally very well layed out and labelled.
That's one of the reasons I envy Yankee plumbers. Watching Steve Lav's vids, it appears that the majority have their boilers, furnaces, hw heaters in a big, spacious cellar. Boiler, etc normally in middle of celllar with loads of room to work and easy access to everything, inc pipes.
In UK it's either shoe-horned into a kitchen cupboard, at the tightest area of a dirty, dusty, cobweb and fibreglass insulation filled loft or at the back of a pokey airing cupboard where you risk being killed with an avalanche of the obligatory towel mountain.
Our US plumbing brothers don't know they're born!

Ah, the age old question of Hit Water!!........ Most Barrat Boxes now have a combi fitted, and given they can be 35-40KW combis, they’re close to the performance of an Unvented Cylinder. Very lucrative doing UVC servicing, an annual requirement.
As for multi-shower use, your average shower needs about 12ltr/minute mixed water so a 35KW Combi would on Paper not quite do it, depending on incoming main temperature, but generally a 35KW Combi will do two showers........But hey remember, you can limit the flow rate to any shower, with no noticeable difference to performance.
Fibre Washer, the Master Plumber & Trade artisan has a video on Utube on a shower install in Puller Towers👍👍👍

They seem to keep everything very basic too Woody - if it works why change it

If you watch Steve Lav, he was moaning because although there's still loads of old school boilers for him to fix, the numbers of HE boilers are starting to creep up and he's struggling with the new tech. Saying he will eventually have to give in and learn to service and repair them. This HE shit doesn't ever save any money in the long run.

Condensing boilers will save you money, but you must have the right Controls. The objective is to get your home heated up & then run the boiler just ticking-over. If it modulates down to below 50degreesC Flow temperature, it’ll condense more & recover more heat from the flue gasses.
Most modern boilers have the ability to use Open Therm Controls. It’s clever stuff OT!!! It’s a Master & Slave control; so, the Room Thermostat is the Master & the Boiler is the Slave. A fairly inexpensive control & it’ll save you 20-30% on your Gas Bill.

They'll only save you money if you can afford to heat your home to the recommended temperatures during the cold winter months in the first place.
Many people can't afford to do this (even in this day and age).
This is were our governments thinking is out of sync with many of it's peoples.

And don't forget Mr Pullers exorbitant annual fees. My boiler doesn't need servicing so I pay £100 to nobody once a year .
P.S. My view is charge whatever you like but be honest. Don't say a part needs replacing or a boiler needs replacing when it doesn't. I'm sure most on here don't do that.

I'm sure you're a great engineer. Just wondering if you're an honest plumber too? Half the problems at Dafty Towers have either been due to plumbers from 40 years ago who cut all the corners in unseen areas. The latest one I found (toilet with two pan connectors ) and posted up you rightly made some negative comments about. The other problems were due to some terrible bathroom fitters who were really tilers and plasterers so you can imagine what they did with the plumbing. You're the one who has helped me the least if at all but the funny thing is I've got you to thank for my newly found plastering skills. You were talking about the speed skim a couple of years ago which led me to try it and I've never looked back. Of course nobody owes me anything and I'm grateful for any advice I get and hopefully some of it will help others who happen to venture here.
