Probably only 3 or 4 weeks but to be sure I've said 3 months.
My heating is vented with header tanks and hw cylinder. Traditional s plan .
I'm thinking of going away and before you say its illegal and WTF are you doing travelling blah blah, I've haven't seen my just turned 4 year old son and twin daughter since before christmas and it is one of the valid legal reasons to travel.
I've got a kind neighbour coming in and he might need access to water at the sink so planning to leave mains water on to the house but then turn off virtually every other valve including the water to the tanks in the loft (so if there is some kind of leak no more than a tank full will come out).
Will the heating be just fine (set quite low just for the cat) or could enough of the water evaporate in the header tank to cause trouble? Maybe with it being summer is in my favour?

For my money since you've got cover just leave it all as it is - why cause if your leaving the mains on then why worry about the rest.
However, if I have been to anything on an empty property it's nearly always attached to a failed flexi or a couple of times F & E tank with no lid and birds got stuck and jammed the overflow.

I figured that way at least there'd be no water going upstairs. Very useful to hear about your experiences of issues with empty houses. TRying to think....I think only flexis are low pressure feeding toilets and sinks/basins. Oh...apart from the kitchen sink...hmm.... Haven't completely made up my mind but would the CH run that long or is it hard to say?

I can't see you losing much from the tank longs it got a good sealing lid.

I can't see you losing much from the tank longs it got a good sealing lid. It doesn't right now - just soft plastic bag style cover filled with insulation that rests on the top. If I do go down that route maybe get my roll of cling film out !

If I do go down that route maybe get my roll of cling film out ! The water vapour condenses on the lid from the venting action when the boiler is running so longs the over flow is clear so the tank can breath cling film will do but a plastic lid would be the job with the vent passing through the lid via a grommet.

Cheers Battle. Not sure I'd find a lid for the 20-40 year old open tank. I guess if I knew I was staying here I'd fit a new style tank with lid. In the meantime maybe how it is is ok (with tons of polystyrerene insulation over the top) One of the first Dafty jobs I did was follow some (crappy ?) advice from the diy donuts forum maybe 10 years ago. They were talking about a combined feed and expansion so now there isn't a vent. Obvisouly the boiler has a stat but if that broke it wouldn't be good.

The vent and feed get combined when the feed gets blocked (the feed typically being 15mm and the vent 22mm) first as it feeds from the bottom and the vent is a swan neck into the lid at a preset value. So the one pipe modification is to connect the feed into the vent not the other way thus the vent stays.

So it sounds foolish what I did which was to remove the swan neck and just connect up the 15mm and 22mm together. I did it thinking it might help with air in the system which it didn't as the solution to that was putting in an aav before the pump.
Mind you its been ok for 10 years so I'd be relcutant to mess with it unless either we stay or maybe if rent it out. 2 dead tenants wouldn't do me much good.

I expect It must air lock easy when working on and refilling must be fun it but if your happy and it works then that's it then.

You're worrying about the wrong sort of tanks. Did you see the Ruskies lining their armoury all along the Ukranian border the other day?
