I've inherited a pair of broken grips and thought brew-cabiner's might like to see how I repaired the Neilson ones that I broke a couple of years ago.

nice one Tappy, Even though we are now living in a 'throw away ' society, Its sometimes worth doing a repair to tide you over, The yoofs would never think to do that,

I'm going to test them over what will become on Friday the last year of my working life (I'll then be one of the first of the new generation of retirement at 66 person's)!
I've heard something about a new requirement for manufacturers to make their products repairable once again in a bid to end the throw away society. For me though, it's down to cheap goods from China v the high cost of western labour!
N.B The apprentice has thrown away quite a lot of his tools or viewed them not worth the effort of a rescue when they drop under the floor or down the backs of units. He won't ever go back to a property and ask if he left a prize tool there...whereas we would. Could be a little generation gap thing opening up (although it's nothing like the one which we experienced when we started work)!

I’ve lost very few tools over my career, which I put down to not having any money to buy them as an Apprentice & always having tool storage, where there’s a place for everything & everything in its place👍👍

It's not just the yoof or tradesmen who are careless with money or Cavalier about binning perfectly good tool for want of a quick repair. Couple of years ago my brother bought a pair of garden loppers and within 6 months the bolt that the two halves pivot on had snapped. Being a clutz (and heavy handed with tools, which is poss why the bolt sheared), he just binned them.
By the time he told me, they had gone in the back of a bin lorry. Told him he should have got a refund or brought them to me as I have 100s of nuts and bolts that would have fitted and had them working again. No sense, and as a result, no money either.
All I can say is -

I find the majority of the young ones today aren't interested in work they just attend and see their wage as an attendance allowance.
However, if you want to see them work (and they can) that means the job would have to be at a subcontract rate, so each job needs to be issued to them at a price, which they decided if they take it or not. I see it as super self employed but covered by the attendance allowance - good if you can get it.

The youths of today get a place at the local collage for two years to train as an apprentice plumber, then after the two years is up and they haven't managed to find employment they are then released and a next generation of wannabe apprentice plumbers replaces them.
Makes money for the colleges but it's far from ideal for the youngsters.

The firm I’m with most of the apprentices are shite!! In my day they’d get the shit kicked out of them on a daily basis. But hey, you can’t do that now & you need to treat them with kid gloves.

What Brazing Rods are you using CF. I recently bought Flux Core Rods from China & they claim you can weld loads of metals together with them, just using a MAPP Gas Torch. I’ll find a link & post it up. Ive been too busy to try them yet😡😡😡

They me cost £3.59 from e-bay Dick, however, that traders no longer trading now, nonetheless they should be plenty more on e-bay if you do a search of the below item.
10/20 Aluminum Brazing Solution Welding Flux-Cored Rod Low Temperature Wire Home SKU: Size: 1.6mm-20pcs
Tappy,
PS I've got some left so if anyone would like x 2 rods I'd be willing to send them a sample given a postal address that is.
