sorry I know this is probably a common query but just wanted some advice before I proceed , intermittently we have really loud pipe banging noise (which Id imagine is water hammer), when using the hot water this goes on for some minutes, if you turn the cold mains on it quietens down leading me to believe it is the float valve in the loft cold water tank ?, I went up and turned down the isolator valve and it seemed to cure it but noticed it occurred again today but a lot quieter - can I repair it or do I need a new one ?, a search on here mentions Peglar but don't seem to see them at screwfix/toolstation - out of interest can you use the toilet fill valves i.e. viva instead or is it float valves only ?

I agree with endfeed, A new ball valve is only a few quid and its takes just as long or even quicker to change rather than re washering,

When 227Ltr Tanks in the Attic were the norm & every new build home had one. It was common practice to have a Tee on the vertical pipe at the Ballvalve, the pipe continued above the Tank Ballvalve by 150-200mm was capped, this was called the Air Lift. It acted like a cushion & completely eliminated Water Hammers👍👍👍

Yes Dick I remember those days too, then in the 1990,s a clerk of works has us taking loads out because, new water regulations banned the ' dead legs because of harboring harmful bacteria, And the war drums played all over the council houses,

just an update, that didn't cure it-just washed up and off she goes again-this time shot up the loft like a ferret up a drain pipe and put my hand on the cold water pipe feeding the tank/s and it stopped removed hand started again- only light pressure being needed, so looking at the pipe it comes out of the airing cupboard for about a foot does a 90 for about 2 foot then another 90 up for 2 foot and then feeds the expansion tank and on to the cold water tank all unsupported, so have but a brace between the supports and a couple of 15mm pipe clips on the up section. Hopefully that will stop it-I'm wondering if the water pressure has risen a bit ?

you did right to support all that unclipped pipework because that would contrbute, If it still does it after that try turning the stop tap down a bit,
