Hi all what control s would you use installing an unvented cylinder heated by a communal heating service? Never fitted one off a communal hot yet. Usually the cylinder would call for heat and fire the boiler and open the 2 port but there's no boiler to fire, I guess the cylinder has to open a 2 port via a controller without the boiler control connection. Am I missing anything? Thanks. Ray

Evening Ray.
Never worked on one but there coming to our area currently, although it's going to be A geothermal source, so future fun in the pipeline.
I assume each property has its own heating interface unit (HIU) which you will have access to to control on demand from your programmer or cylinder control via either two or three port system as heating will still have to be managed.

Hi battle nothing as fancy as a hiu, it's a 70s block with a communal boiler in the basement. They have an ancient electric immersion direct which means they're not using the communal boiler to hear their water so just an indirect on the communal heating circuit. But how to control it? (Belting weather today!)

It would be difficult to get round the 3rd unvented safety device requirement of supplying a thermal cut out on the main heating device if any unvented cylinder was ever heated from a universal boiler.
Interface units are the more popular units that are fitted to commercial properties these days that have their heat fed from a central boiler.

Thanks CF, what about a thermal store??

Thermal stores ( sludge buckets) are a poor relation to unvented systems, you could always heat the cylinder from immersion heaters from the house/flat its in,

I'm going to measure up this week so thanks for all the suggestions. 👍

Thanks CF, what about a thermal store?? I've never actually fitted one, however, if it's an unvented cylinder thermal store then the same set of safety rules will still apply.

Depending on the communal F&R temperatures, Delta T, flow rate etc. Plate Heat exchangers maybe your answer👍👍
Have a look at my set-up in Puller Towers, this eliminates the need for a shower pump.
Look in Utube for Fibre Washer, that’s my very good self👍👍

This is the Dick Puller instant hot water shower that he fabricated form a plate heat exchanger that gives, a realy good shower ( Oliver Puller) told me that,

Shows just what you can do with things though if you can use a bit of ingenuity.
