Ok So my Customer reported Header tank ( C H ) keeps on overflowing and after previous discussions with Tom & Dick it was suggested that I get the customer to tie up the float and empty the header tank down to normal limit so when the boiler switched on it would allow for normal water expansion,,,that was a week ago....... my customer came back to me today now saying that the tank has stopped overflowing in fact the water level has dropped significantly almost exposing the exit pipe / fill system pipe,,,,, he reckons in six days 2ltrs emptied out somewhere so what would you guy's think is the problem now as I am really at a loss on this one ......... Because if he sets the header tank to normal level and just lets the float as normal then the tank will overflow in about 8 to 10 days when the boiler is working normal which is hot water only at the moment..... as said before new ball valve already fitted any suggestion to solve would be greatly appreciated thank you.......

For the cost of another ball valve I would replace it as my starting point. Next I would install measuring device (s/s ruler) in the tank so an accurate daily measure of the water could be taken at the same time everyday.

this is good investigating work because, now we know there is a leak, the tank should not lose that amount in this short time, So now i'm thinking there is a intermittent leak that the ball valve is topping up and when the intermittent leak stops, there is too much water in the tank so it overflows, likely suspects are, a leaky rad valve, a push fit fitting, a unsoldered joint, ( I've stripped old heating pipes out and found unsoldered joints that have been there for years), My next move would be, pressurize the system with mains pressure to hopefully find the leak, good luck with this one astra

Depending on the Header & F&E tank levels & how they’re sited in relation to one & another. The F&E tank could now be feeding into the Header Tank via the leaking cylinder coil. Just a thought.......
My suggestion would be; pressure test the CH system, even with Mains pressure. Repair any leaks as required & rip the rest out.......Fit a Combi boiler. A day’s work & a new boiler with 10+ years warranty.

Hi Tom Dick so are you saying there is no split coil then So what's the best way to pressurize the system please ?? Many thanks thanks in advance for your words of Wisdom,,,,,,,,,,, Every day is a school Day

Oh I still think you’ve a leak in the cylinder coil. But, I also think you may have a leak in the CH system also.
As I recommended, fit a Combi.

Water will always try and find it's own level Astra and it's always the lowest tanks overflow that will run with a split coil.
A totally wrong thing to do would be to fit the feed and expansion tanks at exactly the same height as each other then the overflow would stop running (even if the cylinder coil is split).

I've told you my favorite way astra in a PM so I'll give you an alternative, If there is a drain off on a rad put a hose pipe on the drain off, use a jubilee clip to make sure it can't blow off, Put the other end on an outside tap, Blank off the expansion pipe over the tank and the cold feed and turn on the outside tap and open the drain off, then to play safe, turn off the outside tap when you hear the water has stopped moving, of if all of a sudden you hear, GUSHHHHHHHH,,,
