My old mentor would always say the best tool for undoing pump valve unions is a big adjustable spanner or normal spanner, he said to me pump pliers give the union nuts to much pressure in where they bite and union nuts are quite flimsy causing the nut to dig in too much to the pump thread making it a harder job. A spanner will always give equal load pressure on the nut surface as it's flat to flat, thus helping in undoing the union. I've always followed that logic and it seems to work .
Looks like you may have something there, PB. Just noticed BES do a special tool to solve the very problem you're on about. Never seen them before and wonder if they're any good. Not expensive, especially if it saves loads of effort.

Op in 't North when all else fails, A sturdy screwdriver, a lump hammer and drive the pump valve gland nut into submission by, twatting the screwdriver into the outer rim of the gland nut in a anti clockwise motion, should that fail, drain down, cut the lot out and rebuild,

woody good find and I'd be interested to know if plastic can defeat brass, the thing with brass is, Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, when water is passing through, the zinc moved and causes, dezincification , this causes a brass nut to ' weld ' itself to a brass screw, Sometimes they are unpartable,

Thanks Tom. I did wonder how a plastic tool could take the forces needed to undo a seized pump nut, but what do I know? Did look on Youtube to see if there are any videos showing it in action, but none there.

Good God, man!!! Go and say three hail Marys and wash your mouth out with strong Ribena.
I've got the Monument one as it's not made of chocolate like the Silverline one. Also their chunky immersion element ring spanner never fails.

I have the monument compression spanner Dickie, I never use it because it has too much drift for tight spots..... rendering it useless for most plumbing jobs, unless you have plenty of room of course.

I use my Silverline & Monument 15/22mm nut spanners all the time. The ring spanner I chopped in two & use it on Boiler Repairs. It fits lots of nuts in the guts of boilers,
