I'd say for normal plumbing, propane because its cheaper but, its also worth having some MApp if you need the extra temperature to braze or even if you are soldering brass the higher temp helps you,

Hi Tom thanks for reply
I live on the wirral and it's a lovely part of the world...lots of lovely places to walk in all weather's...the beach you saw on the news ìs at Hoylake and its the council trying to preserve conservation and wildlife but locals feel its a cost saving exercise dressed up as something else... My wife feels they will eventually reclaim the land and build on it which would be sad... the wirral is a hidden gem in parts ...

Propane or mapp Preferences for soldering and why The MAPP Gas type Propane cylinders are fairly cheap & the mob I work for supplies them, disposable bottles like that he yellow ones. They’re OK, but my colleges & I find they burn fairly dirty when soldering & progress to burning manky as the cylinder gets empty. The 2000 type refillable bottles are heavier to use, but burn cleaner. The yellow MAPP Gas as Tom says, burns a lot hotter. It’s now commonly used in AC for Brazing copper pipe. Any copper tube & fittings above 28mm, I’d use Yellow MAPP.

Went for a 'Rona jab in Bristol yesterday. The centre we went to is actually the local Nightingale hospital, which thankfully never had to be used for it's intended purpose. My eyes were immediately drawn to the big bore copper pipes with end feed joints running all the way around the tops of the walls in this massive space. It's to carry the oxygen that fed each bay that would have had a bed in it if it was used for patients with Kung Flu. Tried to imagine the value of all that copper - two of the main pipes were about the size of domestic drain pipes. Also the time and skill sweating 100s of large joints to a high standard for medical use.
Anyway, the point is I don't think they would have used propane - would have been Mapp. Just hope the local pikeys don't get in there, they would be able to retire with all that copper.

Shame you couldn't sneak out a photo - would have liked to have seen that.

All that copper would be off the wall if it was in Liverpool. Scousers could teach the pikeys a thing or two.
Seriously I don't use Mapp, it's too hot for small bore, domestic work. I would rather take a bit more time warming the fittings than nuke them.
Can just make it out in these images -

Nice pics. Shouldn't there be tees down to each bay?

Propane, more controllable and easier to use, just what im used to really. Even though the mapp now isn't really mapp i find it unnecessarily fierce.

I think Mapp is more popular with the young un's than propane gas is which I used for most of my plumbing career. It's only in the last 3 years that I decided to go onto Mapp gas. It did take a bit of getting used to though in that you have to move the flame around the pipe you are soldering MUCH more because the heat is more concentrated.
NB. I once worked with a plumber who used Taymar disposable gas canisters of Butane gas which took much longer to heat up than propane did, however, he was famous for never having any leaks so perhaps he knew something I didn't?

My total experience consists of one and a half bottles of mapp - so tiny compared to you guys. But reading this I'm thinking I chose the wrong fuel. Next time my bottle needs renewing its gonna be propane.
