Though we should always follow a ‘Safe Isolation’ procedure!! But I for one, have not always done so. I cringe at times when I see the horrors of some Central Heating Controls wiring. Even qualified Sparks are dangerous. I’ve a pal & I laughed like a Drain when he told me the Spark he uses to wire his systems, had ‘taken out’ a £250 PCB on a brand new boiler he fitted😂😂😂😂 Im going to up my game when wiring CH, always use Bootlace Ferrules etc. Use Opentherm controls more. Charge more & take more pride in my Spark Work. A mate of mine has been a plumber all his working life, yet wiring a CH controller is usually beyond him. I've lost count of the CH controllers he's blown up. You know, If you can’t understand Electrics & to a certain degree Electronics, you can never call yourself a ‘Heating Engineer’, you’re only a Washer Changer Plumber. Electrics are now such an integral part of our Trade.

I can remember the same statement being made in 1972 and indeed we did study electrics as part of the then 3 year city and guilds in plumbing qualification. The JIB rates for plumbers were also introduced around this time with the intention of plumbers moving away from the building trade in the direction towards electricians pay rates with what was called at the time an "harmonisation of pay" (it never quite happened)! These days with part p registration now needed to complete a lot of the plumbing wiring jobs that I could once to do off my own bat with my C&G in plumbing things seem to have gone backwards for the plumbing trade methinks. Take the wiring up of an electric shower swap for instance, this has become very a very hazy process for both trades. The firm that I used to work for said that we could legally disconnect the old shower then fit and wire up and test the new shower (to see it it worked). Then we were supposed to disconnect the wiring and then lock off the unit at the electrical supply until an electrician could get to reconnect it back up and test and register it. What a farce eh? When we brought it up with the gaffer (who thought up these shenanigans to get round part p) said that he's not bothered if we electrocute ourselves as long as we don't electrocute the customer, bloody typical!

This just came up on the you tube and I found it to be of interest, especially when tied in with the content that's been posted this thread.

A couple of you-tube videos of plumbers doing electrical work. First one up is "Jaws" doing a temp' call-out repair to get the heating on by overriding the 3 port mv. The 2nd one is the gas boiler guy who's been called to an er lets say an uncoventional bit of plumbing and wiring. It's a bit like being back in the 70s when we could design our own heating systems and things were not so formal and orderly as they are today? I enjoyed this one!

I feel in the first video he should have done better for a man with such a high opinion of his abilities - I know he was 12 hours in to his working day but that's not an excuse. The second video - he has an understanding of the logic behind the system he is repairing and works systematically- he was always going to get a result. Cheers for posting them Tappy.

I quite enjoy watching these kind of videos nowadays (maybe it's because I'm now retired and can watch without participating).
I thought "Jaws" did well on his because he was on a out of hours call-out (make safe) and he actually got it working even though he hadn't got the part for a permanent fix. I'm sure BG would have just dropped off a fan heater and put in a follow up job for next day for their £100s worth. I've seen a really interesting video somewhere explaining how a 3 port valve holds it's mid position.
The other video the plumber said that it was a bodge job by the ex boyfriend. I'm thinking more like the ex is a plumber who's done a bit of home experimenting with the system and then fell out with the girlfriend!

JW does a great video explaining the workings of a Mid-Position valve.

Ah, it’s Turkey Teeth from Hull!! Who should know there’s a problem with these Honeywell Programmers. The Relays blows in them, it’s common knowledge!! Chances are the poof has been trimming his beard & posing too much, he’s missed it on Social Media.

Yes the two new LED Down-lights are working, it’s the Kitchen Light only, which is also a LED, that’s on the blink. I’ve 240vac Live at the Kitchen Light, But no Neutral. I think I’ve a broken Neutral somewhere😡😡😡 Update, all sorted. Just a broken wire in a terminal block👍👍 Be very careful when searching for a damaged/broken Neutral wire, as the broken Neutral can have 240vac on it!!
