Hello All
Belated Happy New Year....
I got two questions really.
Just added a load of additives to stop my boiler making a loud FLAT FLAT FLAT kind of sound on occasion especially when starting up. It seems a bit better after a couple of weeks but still makes the noise occasionally. I noticed it did it even when I put the boiler stat to zero so it switched off but the external pump was still running. We are in a very hard water area. In summer could it be worth taking the HE out and soaking it for a couple of days in pure "boiler reducer" or similar?
Also, if I want to drain down to replace a rad could I close off all the other existing rads to keep most of the water so I don't need to buy a load more boiler noise-reducer and inhibitor again?
Thanks for reading !

For a similar situation I got good results to cure the noise by cleaning the heat exchanger in place using
Fernox Heavy Duty Domestic Appliance Limescale Remover Descaler DS-3 2Kg Tub
it took six hours on Y plan system just running it through the hot water circuit “only” and cost £33.00
Your thoughts on central heating radiator replacement will work but I would just flush the whole lot and recharge with Fernox MB1 4ltrs from City Plumbing for £34

old skool plumbing technique , don't spend money on central heating additives, Use cheap washing up liquid, here's the test, 1.turn on your kitchen sink and listen the water gush, add washing up liquid and hear the difference, 2. that is because you have changed the PH value of the water, 3. apply that thinking to your heating system, 4. put your money back in your wallet because, thats all an inhibiter is,,,,,

I was told this many years ago by a top plumber that the "Kettling" noise on these boilers was caused by the casting on the inside of cast iron heat exchangers in boilers not being smoothed off at the manufacturer stage and this traps bubbles of air inside the heat exchanger and this is what caused the noise on these boilers. Adding washing up liquid softens the water hence the trapped air bubbles no longer cling to the boilers uneven inside casting surface. Todays boilers are totally different design and I would think that this no longer applies, like me this era in plumbing as passed us all by . Turning off the radiators to preserve inhibitor makes sense to me dd.

Many thanks for the very informative replies.
The kettling doesn't sound anything like a kettle which is troubling me a bit. Its a bang every second for a few seconds. Each bang and the boiler itself vibrates. But it does do it with it switched off as I say (pump still running).
Re fairy, what would be the recommended dosage? Half a litre for a 100L system maybe ?
I'll also try Battle's suggestion in the summer to give the HE a real clean (if kettling is definitely the problem)

You've just very well described what most plumbers would call a kettling boiler dd. Pop, bang, crash, wallop, boom, shake, they would go.
A good dose of fairy for an average system would be about 200ml.

I'm glad you've learned something and, I've now opened the plumbing up to guests as well, I'm hoping it will gain us more interest but I'm also worried we might attract some undesirables so, time will tell hold tight and put your life jacket on,,,

Ah, of course you’ll know Dafty. It’s illegal to remove the casing from a Gas Boiler without being Competent & GS Registered. If you or your family are harmed in any way by your actions, you’ll end up in the Clink as someone’s Cell Bitch. And, as we always said when I was in Caratairs; ‘Any Hole is a holiday’!!!!

To work on your own system you need to be competent but not GS Registered. And to add inhibitor you don't need to be either as far as I know.
