I seriously don’t know what to think. But considering the number of properties in the UK, we do need some kind of authority. The quality of what we currently have is very questionable, in respect of both policing & training.
For Gas, we do have some fantastic training centres & some shockingly poor ones. And, the same can be said for engineers!!

The gas trade is now a much changed industry from what it was and maybe the powers that be could see this coming and knew the plumbers wouldn't be able to cope as they were. For instance I could safely repair/service an old style gas boiler in my sleep (thermocouple, gas valve and burner), but with the invent of combi's plus a totally different set up of workings in them I would be unsafe to carry on with them without some extra training.
PS. I now have my own combi boiler serviced and if needed repaired by someone who was once my apprentice some 16 years ago!

I’m almost certain you could work on pre-gas, condensing, modulating boilers CF. They almost all operate the same way; The Burner, like most burners, use a pre-mix burner. Using a mix of Gas & Air. It modulates up & down by the speed of the Fan. The Fan, takes in Gas at atmospheric pressure, mixes it with air. Its speed is regulated by PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) from the PCB. The same with a Combi/System boiler circulation pump. The Gas Valve. Will regulate the amount of Gas discharged into the Fan. Sometimes, there’s a Ventura & injector between the GV & Fan. But always there’s an injector Upstream or Downstream of the GV. Heat Exchangers. They’re generally very small, with heat & flue gasses dropping to a Sump at the bottom of the HE. The flue gasses then return back up the rear of the HE via the flue duct & discharge from the top through the flue system & terminal. Condensate system. As the flue gasses(Products of combustion) drop & rise within the boiler, more heat is recovered. The appliance will reach a ‘Dew Point’, where large amounts of acid containing H2o is formed. This is drained away on the Condensate pipe. As I’ve stated the Fan & Pump modulates according to the Heat requirements. Internal temperatures are sensed by Thermistors & the whole Firing operation is controlled by the PCB. All very simple! All above was compiled by my good self & no animals were harmed in its creation👍👍

Thanks for all that Dick, a nice and easy to understand of how the components line up and work inside a modern condensing boiler.
Whilst I'm sure I could get my head around these boilers and fully understand all the ifs and whys of them if I had regularly worked on them, however, they still do sound complex to my ears.
I always say that I was a plumber to a generation of plumbing works 1960 -2022. A lot of the older plumbers generation 1900-1960 seemed to struggle with the new central heating work and never really liked copper pipes, but on lead-work they were supreme. Glazing too, I was never really happy handling and cutting glass. Yet I had to get my head around unvented hot water systems and the dreaded "heat pumps" during my last 20 years in the trade.

I must say that when the news of gas assessments first broke in the trade around 1992 it never entered my head that after 30 years of fitting and working on all manor of gas appliances and gas pipes plumbers who had regularly done this work would also have to face the assessments!

Get the wrong light bulb in and it will contribute to creating more greenhouse gas and create global warming! Yep, now even Starmer’s suggesting we need to cut down on meat and dairy products as cows contribute to climate change. ( so that’s why he’s going after the farmers ? ) 😉😉

This climate change scam is just getting out of hand, thankfully, The Donald is ignoring the mad bastards. Anyone see him talking about the electric Tanks, fucking hilarious😂😂😂

I do recall sitting my first Gas ACOP, half drunk. As it was on a weekend course in a Hotel & most of us were pissed most evenings😂😂

Don't like Starmar at all after how he behaved in parliament during the attempt to stop brexit.
I thought about it though and I don't feel sorry for the farmers at all. Its inheritance and doesn't even kick in until 3 million quid. Why not do the same for car repair garages that have been in the family for a couple of generations? Or what about ... anything else really. No I don't feel sorry for horsy, posh country boy hoping to get mummy and daddy's 7 million pound estate. Work for it.

Perhaps Dafty you don’t understand how most Farms are SMEs & a family Business. Most just feel like custdodians of the land & a lifetime commitment to maintain the countryside. Farming is a way of life. Of course there’s all the big Landowners & multinational companies. But you must remember, most of these big private landowners are asset rich & piss pot poor.

Hmm not sure about that one Dafty. A lot of farmland is worth a fortune to developers. Who’s to say that a farm that makes say a liveable income for a farming family, when the old man passes, could be valued at well over £3 million ? The valuers might look at the size of the farm and think,, “ If you build a large housing estate here, the land’s worth a fortune” The late farmers family would look at it differently. Not seeing it as a housing estate, but simply as a farm that’s been in the family for hundreds of years 😉😉 (Also Labour are changing planning laws, to make building on green belt land easier )

My firm Subbed for a good Builder & they loved it when there was a Labour Government. They’d say Labour always Build Council Houses. There’s always plenty of Profit building Social Housing. The COW would always take a Bung. Alcoholic Constipation, a Bottle of Islay Malt & they’d pass anything!😂😂👍👍
