Yes, it happened last week, I lost my original tap wrench spanner that I brought all the way back from the states 9 years ago . Hence, I'm looking for a new cheap but good one. I've been looking on e-bay This is a like for like replacement for £9.99 (click and clock from Argos). It's much cheaper than the one I lost, yet it looks ok. The spanner was very good on 3/4" bath taps, but not so good on 1/2"sink taps, rubbish on basin taps (head too big) But the "good on bath taps" makes it a worthwhile choice. Attachment Deleted

Choice No2 £6.42 it's even cheaper than the other one, yet still has that spring loaded jaw (but not the length adjustment).

At £14.20 it's more cash, but it is a Stanley, so it's in the running. Any other ideas anyone? Attachment Deleted

I eventually made up my mind today and decided better the devil you know and ordered an original tapwrencher just like the one I lost. Decided to pay a bit more and buy a Monument named one
Monument 781T DIY Telescopic Plumbing Basin Wrench MON781 Item price £ 13.52 Quantity 1
I hate losing tools, if I break them or wear them out then that's fair enough!

I agree tappy, I just buy the cheap ones at shitfix, they're only a couple of quid so if you're like me and leave them under baths, Its not a major issue,

I find if I don't want knuckle rash any tool which get abuse are top of the range in my box so if that models never let you down I'd say that's been a good buy and wise replacement.

Back in the days of my apprenticeship a salesman flogged the gaffer a couple of these type of adjustable tap spanners, they where strong and excellent a real boon in getting those tight nuts behind baths off. We had to ask the gaffer though to borrow it. Plumber Larry would say to the boss "can I borrow the "Crawl-dad" spanner Sid"? Sid (the boss) would develop a puzzled look before saying, "Ah, you mean the adjustable tap spanner"! I once asked Larry why he called it a "crawl-dad" spanner? Larry's reply, "because he's a creep, and treats us all like his sons.....bastard sons"! Crawl-dad spanner Attachment DeletedI never saw one again until our trip to the USA and was so pleased to see one that I bought it and brought it back to the UK with me. Just a couple of months later I couldn't believe it when I saw a "crawldad" for sale at a local builders merchant. Tappy,

It arrived yesterday. The jaw seems to have a better grip than the one I lost. Fully extended Attachment DeletedI'm (almost) looking forward to my first tight bath tap change job ! For some odd reason it's labelled a DIY basin spanner; I would say its for professional use (DIY seems to imply inferiority). I will let you all know how I get on with it. Tappy, insert code here

Know the feeling well tom. I didn't get the chance to use it today, but hope it's he business now that your getting one.
I seem to think that the original crawldad was a triple extender job, a real beast of a spanner, and like most things were in those days... much better quality.
