Yes , the 22mm will not seal and the joint will leak.................

I've used 22mm olives on many occasion, bit of paste and wring their neck up tight and don't put them under floors, like pipeslice says they can leak, they'll not piss out but it might cause you a sleepless night,

no copper is better its more durable, if it leaked I would apply paste and another turn on the spanner,

When I was at college training to be a plumber I put a mixer shower in my mums bathroom and had to tee off the 1/2'' cold pipe and the 3/4'' hot pipe to do it. I used compression fittings and the new pipework was chrome plated, the old imperial was just plain copper. The 1/2'' cold was fine on a 15mm compression fitting but I tried for ages to get a seal on the 3/4'' pipe and couldn't manage it, I ended up having to file the chrome off the end of the new pipe so I could use a soldered fitting on the 3/4 instead. Since then I've always stocked 3/4'' copper olives. I can't remember if it was brass, would make sense that it was though, you'd need popeye to compress brass enough and I guess there's probably a risk of distorting the copper pipe too much with brass. I also have a bag of 1/2'' olives, my merchant sells 15mm olives at 10p a pair, but he sold me the 1/2'' ones at 15p a pair, I'm pretty sure he was taking the piss though and they're just 15mm
