Customer "This as been going on for over two years it won't stop dripping and I'm on a water meter"
I took the lid off the cistern to reveal a Torbeck valve that was dripping into the cistern.
On examination it looked fine and it was only a month old. Nonetheless I decided to swop it. Three flushes and three successful shut offs and I decided it's OK. Customer "That's what the last plumber said" As I put the lid back on the valve emitted a judder and started to drip "That's what happened last time and the plumber said it will drip for a bit then shut off" said the customer. I'm scratching my head now, so I change the position of the valve and give it the 3 flush test again and it appears to be fine.
Back in my van about to set off the customer suddenly appears saying "it's dripping again! So it's back inside and sure enough it is indeed dripping "I'm not going to tell you it will drip for a bit then stop like the other plumber did instead I'm going to order a part and hope it fixes it".
I'm thinking of a fitting a "shock arrest valve" onto the pipework near the WC hoping this will be the cure.
Anyone else ever come across this?

Iv had trouble before. It was to do with the spiral restrictor in the stem. Think one is blue and other is white.i dint use it and had probs with it shutting off.hope this helpsâș

very strange that, Its never happened to me but then again I hate those torbeck valves, I wonder if another valve might be better like those screwfix have on offer? the torbeck is an equilberal type valve, its needs equal pressure at both sides of the shut off to work, mayby this is the problem ?? I'm not saying it is co i don't know but my first move would be change the inlet valve to another,

I've never come across this one before either. It is located flat 12 in a group of 12 flat-lets; so I'm thinking the sudden shut off of the Torbeck creates a shock wave that travels down the water main which then bounces back when it reaches the end of the line causing the Torbeck to judder when it arrives back and then drip.
Due to the shape of the cistern I wouldn't be able to fit a traditional upstand ballvalve, so it would have to be another type of equilibrium valve.
endfeed.... I too thought this was the problem at first mainly because the other one had the LP restrictor fitted inside which I'd changed to HP when I fitted the new valve.
If the vessel arrest doesn't work I'll try it with another type of valve (I've got 2 other makes on me van).
I'll let you know how I get on with this one.

I would think the shock arrestor will sort that issue, had problems like this before always seemed to be in houses with water meters. Long story short when you shut off a water demand the back pressure is alot like 40 bar not something a fill valve can handle easily lol :-)

No, although I have been since for another job and she recons another plumber came after me and he fixed it (without telling me what he'd done). How frustrating is that? Watch this space! I'll let you know it ever turns up again!

I don't think it is fixed. The young upstart just got lucky (don't forget it's been dripping for 2 years). It will soon start shuddering/dripping again methinks.
I'll keep you informed if I go again for this job.
