Looks like it was all boxed in as well!
It looks a very old valve and not of a make I've seen before. That cable location wedged in between the heating pipes is not too clever either. Good luck with that one.
I've got a couple of 3 way zone valves to replace on Monday Easy to get at but located in a pitch black old coalhouse! Looks like my tomplum headlight will be in use again!

The valve is for the upstairs circuit of this big house and above that valve is a cupboard, so I talked the customer into cutting that one out and looping a new one in to the cupboard making life easier for me and the next plumber in the future.

I can just imagine some poor twat quoting that over the phone and getting to the job and shitting themselves on the spot - well done PB and your forward thinking solution for any future repairs.
