Went to a job yesterday rads aren't getting hot, the floor mounted boiler was in the back and it fires up sat's working and only the bathroom rad is warm no sign off a pump so I ring my boss because he's old school "is this a gravity system?" He said "it's probably a conversion they used to do it like that the bypass stays hot all summer and pump will be under the floor somewhere" he's obviously right just wanna know why it was done like that?? Before my time never see it before and prob never will again.....

It would have been on a solid fuel boiler, the bathroom rad is a 'heat sink', There is no way to control the temp so in the summer the water will get scalding hot so they used the rad to burn off some, When they had it converted to gas they left the pipework as it was, the summertime rad comes in for drying towels, there are still many solid fuel and wood burner boilers, mostly in rural area's
