Hi all, I'm after some advice please. I've come here after seeing loads of Tom's videos on the tube - good for learning and some proper funny bits too...
I'm not very good at explaining so I have some photos. I need to cut into a soil pipe. It's asbestos, I have done one previously in the same building with no problems using a chain type soil cutter. On that job i used a rubber sleve to go from asbestos to plastic. On this I don't have the room so i was thinking of using someting like a Floplast SP140B which will fit inside the existing pipe. Anyway my question is will i have enough vertical slop with this so that I can run my new pipe with a sensible fall up to the new bog?
Thanks
Tony

Tony says its asbestos so its piss easy to cut with a hacksaw, He'll need the correct mask for the job though, Its nasty stuff is asbestos, It was widley used when i was first started work and I've cut many pipes, gutters and pipe insulation as a lad, Luickily I'm ok ( touch wood), nobody was aware then of the dangers but today it needs to be treated with care, qwerty

Is that a right hand outlet WC pan Tone?
Like tom says we used to cut it up, smash it up, saw it up and throw it in the bin back in the day, however, all that's changed now.
If you do saw it have a hand spray handy to damp the dust down whilst sawing, officially I don't think you are allowed to even saw it these days, the good news is that it is of a type that is deemed to be less dangerous than the other types of asbestos are.

Thanks for the reply Tom, I forgot to say that I'm moving the toillet about 600 mm further away so I need to go to modern pipe. The OD of the asbestos is about 123mm, I thought modern pan connectors were just for 110mm. Do you think your connector will seal into the 123mm ok?
Rocketmanbkk - when I cut the last one it went easily - just a quiet crack and no dust. If it cracks in the joint I'll literally be in the shit! Maybe I should use a hacksaw and save the cost of hiring a chain cutter.
crowsfoot - Yes it's a 90deg outlet pan, they seem to be rare nowadays but the flexi connetors seem to make it a non problem.

I don't know if a pan connector will seal, what I'd do is break that first joint and put some 110 plastic into the collar seal it with mastic or cement and work from that if the pan connector wont seal, BTW pan connectors are available in other sizes for cast iron and clay pipe, i've never looked for one for asbestos, they could be available, Anyways drop in anytime Tony for advice or just a chat, you're always welcome,

That's a fantastic idea, it will let me get the pipe more hoizontal and give me a bit more length. Sorry to be dim but how do i break that joint, I dont know if it's cement or some sort of special stuff for asbestos.
What mastic do you think is best?
Thanks again Tom.

Thats a neat way of cleaning the socket, I hope i’ll just be able to stick my 110 pipe into the asbestos one and leave the socket alone. What mastic do you think I should use? There will be a few mm gap so I dunno if silicone will be any good.
I will get a mask, better safe than sorry although we used to make dens out of asbestos sheet when I was a kid.

I'm not sure how silicone sticks to asbestos, So i'd go for cement and defo wear a mask and do as crowfoot suggested too, dampen down the pipe with water, that will stop the dust flying about,
