Sadly we're all wide open to this type of accusation.
Plumbers are an honest and helpful breed at least this is what I've always found them to be.
The police also gave us all some advice with gems like "always work in pairs" and "if you must go into different rooms always take someone in with you"!

One case I had to deal with:-
In a firm I worked for but not me, one of the lads was doing a pre-quoted job for a security business on an industrial estate, fitting one of those CEF supplied Redring hot water boilers.
No sooner had the customer signed the job completed to their satisfaction sheet, that the police we're on the phone, as a security camera had gone missing off site and the engineer who installed the boiler was the one and only suspect. The police requested the engineer to be called back to our office and they would search and interview the engineer - which they did do and found nothing!
Now this camera was a total special for use In mining and could work in hazardous areas, so not the sort of thing a light fingered person would want or easily sell.
Now two or three days latter the cheque arrives for payment of the job, so I thought that's odd, rings the firm up to thank them for such prompt payment, and they couldn't of been nicer to me. So I thought I would ask about the missing camera cause it just didn't ring right. So it turned out their engineer had taken it as their client had accelerated the instal of the camera but not told the office staff! I asked if they'd informed the police of change of circumstances (it's not missing or stolen its installed in some pit) but never got an answer to that and no apology letter came for the engineer who's character they had besmirched.
So it happens but not regularly in my lifetime so far.

I've heard of this one before battle and there is some legal reason why a large cooperate firm cannot be seen to apologise to an individual when they are in the wrong. It's something like..... it leaves them open to be sued, I'm not 100% sure if this is the reason but their is one.

similar thing happened about 10 years ago to one of my collegues on a refurn of council houses on a Manchester site, they phoned the police while he was still in the house, The cops came round and interviwed him in their van, he offered for them to stip search him, which they did, then searched his van, they emptied evertything out, and left it out in the street, they were looking for a diamond ring the tennant had acused him of stealing, they never found it, He refused to go back in the property,So another plumber finished it off, the tennant was also an old dear, It puts doult in your mind, you never know whether the lad was lying, the tennant was lying or just the ring just fell and got lost, We as plumbers have to be seen as squeaky clean, a case such as this can have bad endings for us, smiley-confused002asak2 There is a very entertaining Australian TV Movie called "The Plumber" which as a connection to what we are talking about. I've just looked for a link on you tube - but it isn't on. It's from the 80s, keep a look out for it, I think it's one of David Weirs first productions.
