tom does it have to be knackered or could it be dust from the coals coz i cleaned it a couple of hours ago with the hoover and compressed air. it seems to be running ok how much is a thermacouple? do i need a plumber gas safe to change it?

If cleaning it helped then yes, leave it alone, but its highly likely it will go out again but now you know why, If you're not confident doing it yourself then its better if you get a gassafe plumber in to do it, Its not a hard job but a bit fiddly and if you're worried about your family, its better to be safe and get the right man in,
they only sell the complete pilot assembley and its about £25 for it, that incudes the pilot, thermacouple and electrode,

hi.thanks to everyone the fire is still working been using it for a good few days with no problems. i think it was some dust that stopped it from turning on. What's even better now is i don't have to run around looking for the lighter now to turn it on as i discovered there is a battery which was dead. which i changed and now the clicker works again so no lighter needed.Thank you all for all your help

That's good to hear aj, seems to have been a "win win" (this time).
