they were a 1980's invention, you got hot water at cold mains pressure, the boiler heats the cylinder with boiling water, then the cold mains water runs though a coil inside and distrubutes water at mains pressure at a high temp, but then the unvented cylinders came in and made these things a thing of the past, but there are still many in existance, Another item committed to the "plumbing museum of not so good ideas". It took Combi boilers around 10 years to catch on, so in another lifetime they also could have easily gone the same way.

Combi's to me were always a good idea, the early ones were not very good but have developed into a very efficient machine, I installed one in my home in 1996 when i was making a 2 bed house into a 3 bed house and needed the cylinder cupboard to come out for the space, I never looked back since then, combi's were for me,I love them, Instant hot water and it will run allday if you need it, unventented comes a close second with a vented traditional third and i would't have a sludge bucket for love nor money, I think its wasted heat and very dangerous if it bursts, combis rule

I miss old Walter aka Water Systems, Big Burner etc etc. He was great!! I think(?) I know who he was, I think he was the MD of Churchill Systems, they made electric boilers etc. He'd retired & I had several conversations with him, interesting guy. He'd a Cottage with an electric boiler & a CHIPS heating system. But that's a story for another day chaps.....

Permitting direct connection of the cold water mains to h/w systems. Wouldn't it be fun if we have to take them all back out after Brexit !

the first one I fitted was ferolli , it was absolute shite, it gave about 5 litres a minute, I said I would never fit a combi but as they became better I grew fond, the one i fitted at my house was an alpha ocean, It gave an impressive 9 litres/min. now a days 13 lites/min is the norm. they've come a long way,

I changed over my 30 year old boiler last year for a combi.
Gave it a lot of thought beforehand on what to fit but decided to keep it simple with a re-pipe new radiators and a combi.
The first combi boiler that I ever came across was back in 1996 and the customer hated it.

ah the ole ' fridge on the wall' I did't realize they went back that far,,, the first i remember was a Servowarm combi, it was 80.000 btu and had 2 gas valves, one for hot water and one for heating, it was poor but the salesmen sold them saying " these are the future" they were right, but it was a long time before they were any good,

Yes, I found they gave very little hassle and still come across them today, although now it's normally for a leaking expansion vessel and then it's time for replacing.
