you can take the shroud off and use a gatevalve wheel head or an ajustable spanner,

What key do you guys use on 22mm lockshields. Can the sheild be removed to switch off??cheers guys. I used to have (but lost it) a special 3 way key that fitted those valves. It was all brass and defo' not a meter key. They look like District Heating valves leading into a property EF? Full of black sludge scalding hot water and no one ever knows where the main valve to turn off the water are located should it go wrong (usually in a locked up boiler house)!! Those valve tops can shoot out at you when that shield is removed, so if you do take it off go very carefully with it when you turn them they nearly always leak when being turned (but will make up by themselves) but do keep going until it's fully off and always put the shield straight back on. Why do they put such flimsy valves to control such important pipework?

Hi c/f, the valves were for secondary hot water f,r. For a school so I think they have been balanced.are the keys called something like ''isle of man key'' ? Could do with one in my toolbag.bought one of those four way ones from toolstation but never use it!!!

Yes, that looks very much like the key I used to have. Quite expensive, yet it gives the plumber piece of mind that nothing can go wrong when turning those type of valves so if your doing a lot of work on them it's well worth the price, just to eliminate the nightmares!! Good one Arfur.
