Hello,
I hope this is the right place to post this. So to start I am 22 and looking at making a job/career change and become a plumber. For the past three years I have been forklift driving in a warehouse and I am soon to be made redundant. Previous to this I was also in the army for three years. So instead of getting another dead end job in warehousing I think it's time that I get a trade behind me and become a plumber. I am willing to pay for the training that I will need to get the relevant qualifications. Does anyone on here know of any company/individual in the Wigan area who would be willing to take me under there wing and give me work as a labourer whilst learning the trade on the job and also through courses if needed?
Kind regards

hello Joe and welcome to the forum, You've got the right frame of mind and the best way to learn is to ,get in there and do it, If you go asking to be a labourer thats all they will let you do, Go to one of the big firms and ask to start as a trainee, the big firms are Rothwells, stephens way goose green MB heating derby lane Hindley H20 plumbers they might take you on as a trainee and put you with a plumber, thats the best way to learn, then as you go do do a day a week at college to gain qualifictions, and come here and teach us stuff too as you learn,

Get experience but also college. Night school is usually good, slow & steady. I'd stay away from these 10 weeks to professional plumber & gas safe places.
All the best chum

I did factory work for years kept being made redundant, when I hit 30 I thought its time for a change ,I was like you mate,so I went to college in the evenings and sat mornings got a job as a maintenance man and we had plumbers come and tackle the big stuff and I stuck to those guys like glue and learnt shit loads from them and ended up doing my portfolio with them. Got my papers and worked for a plumbing company ,money was bit shit! But learnt so much, then got job were I am now and earning well im 44 now and so glad I did it, so you go for mate it will open lots of doors for you.

I went to night school when my desk job was beginning to look insecure and it was good. Most of the people there were paying for the course out of their own pockets so were keen to learn. A few had been sent from employment schemes and didn't put much effort in. I was lucky enough to work with a neighbour for a couple of years go get practical experience - the combination of both is what you need. That was about five years ago and I'm in my third year of being self employed now and business is slowly building. Good luck!

Cheers for the advice lads! I sent out 20 emails to various companies and individuals in the Wigan area explaining my situation and asking is there any chance of being taken on as a trainee. In the past I have had reply asking do I have experience which is a bummer how am I supposed to have her experience of no one is willing to give you a chance without. Anyway I will keep trying again thank you
