I think someone suggested making one with a bit of 15mm pipe.

I looked into this Rocky, the ones you buy have a little piston inside that stop the water getting into the airspace, So its not just a piece of tube, thats why they're so dear, You can use a lenght of pipe as an shock arrester but this can make a breeding ground for Bactria, legionaires diseace is one, So its best to buy one and be safe,

I got called out to a leak in a loft and it was a tiny ,what look like expansion valve, about the size of a tennis ball! Didnt know what the fook it was, took it to the merchant and it turned out to be a one of these shock arresters....silver it was it had spit on the seem...anybody else come accross tthese ones before ....

yea they quite common near a ballvavle, they stop that sudden bang or the water hammer that can happen as the ballvalves comes near to shutting off,

anything in direct contact with water will fail eventually, thats why plumbers are always busy

We always extended a piece of copper tube above the ballvalve fitted to a tank. This was supposed to fill with air & act like a shock absorbers.

Yes thats it battle, it was on mains going to shower accross loft then dropped down to elecy shower... it had split right on the seem in the middle....
