I have had trouble sometimes , cleaning old copper pipe - tried the lot - abrasive cloth - wire brush tool - wire wool and self cleaning flux but sometimes the joint doesn't seal All way round.
I have tried an old fashioned idea - Spirits of Salts - Hyrochloric acid - sold as drain cleaner.
Soak the end of the pipe in it for 2 or 3 minutes - wash it off with water - clean as a whistle.
Very strong acid - severe burns if you chuck it about - but works for me if I'm stuck.
anyone else tried it ?

It is bloody strong stuff - I had the lid off a bottle of it on the bench in the workshop - only for an hour or so - it sent all the tools that were hanging above it really rusty - that's just the fumes.

Its usually sold as Roundup, the round up you buy in the shops is usually 120 gms/Ltr, if you can get hold of the stronger stuff 360gms/Ltr that the commercial gardeners/farmers use its a lot better.

We have a small allotment shop on our allotment site and they sell it, they measure out the amounts in multiples of 250ml into old glass jars, a ltr costs £12, I don't know how much they get it for, but £50 seems about right. You could try and find four or five people to split the cost, as a litre goes a very long way.
