My dad got "investigated" by HMRC, many years ago when he were a professional entertainer. First he knew about it was when he was "invited " to an interview at the local tax office. At the end of it they reckoned he'd diddled them out of about £500 tax over 5 yrs. They added interest and a few other things, then dropped the bombshell that they would impose their own "fine" to make sure he never fiddled tax again. Final bill was around three and a half grand.
