I think if I was plumb full time buying loads of materials & boilers or vat registered I'd get an accountant
Mine are easy
Cheques & bank credits in
Bits & pieces out
It's my 4th yr self employed & im turning a profit which is good

I took the plunge last year and did my own for the first time in ten years, although you sacrifice a few hours at least by the time you list everything and sitting down to do paperwork gets on my tits, it's pretty straightforward to do and saves yourself hundreds. Just gotta properly read what they're asking, as the click of one button determined whether I owed them £1100 (I nearly had a stroke), or they owed me £2700. I opted for the latter.

The likes of us sole traders are such small fry by comparison to other construction companies, yet we're still motivated by fear that we'll end up with a penalty or something. Bigger companies take the piss out of the tax system something chronic, and we agonize over whether to declare that tenner off Mrs Jones for changing the lightbulb......

I remember the story one of the rags (mail I think) ran saying that self employed plumbers in London were earning a hundred odd grand a year!! Fucking hell no wonder the masses flocked to the week wonder courses, and as a result most simple folk now think you've got a rolex on each arm, and you're pipeslice is platinum. Just keep the fifties under the bed for a rainy day is best.....

Done my own three line returns since starting up on my own. The busier you get the longer it takes but it's pretty easy. I usually do it online on deadline day but was pretty keen last year and did it early. One time I got it in at 11:59pm, one minute later and it would of been £100 fine then a tenner for each day late. Every year I promise myself that I'll do it throughout the year but have never done it yet, just panic when there's not long left and scratch my head thinking 'what was that receipt for?'
