Mmmm funny you should say that,,whenever i've asked a joiner " can i borrow one of your chisels" There's look of fright, followed by the answer, " no,,fuck off",next time i'll use a new approach,,," hi mate, heres a coffee, while you drink it, can i borrow a chisel ?",,

Ha, it's because we know that either a joist is about to have about 5 inches removed from the depth to fit an inch and half waste or that it's to be used to bend an awkward nail over that you can't get at with your hammer

Mate of mine who I do work for occasionally, has this annoying habit of taking a chisel out of my toolbox and chopping chases for electrics into solid walls. When I'm round at his house, or anywhere he's working I hide me tools.

Slightly off topic, but I've always circled the wagons when a groundworker has come up asking to borrow either a Stanley knife or a handsaw, as undoubtedly they're either planning to drive the knife into their leg to facilitate an early finish, or hoping to use said handsaw to cut the roll of 18 inch damp course down to 6inch on top of a concrete slab, just ensuring every tooth kisses the concrete so it's fucking useless once they give it back. Either way they're out to fuck you.

Don't give anything to the 'Grubbers', you'll never see it again. One of the guys that works with me had his tools nicked by the Ground Workers. It was a new squad that nobody knew, gypo cunts!! Unwritten Site rule; you never steal other Tradesman's tools - they're their bread n butter.

I think a part of it is that the holy trinity of trades, plumbers, sparks and chips, have to pay an absolute fucking fortune to own the tools we need to do a job for and earn some money off the back of it, which gives us a bit of pride and we have a bit of respect for a man's gear. A groundworkers shovel, or a brickies small bucket of crusty trowels, or a plasterer with a ninety quid paddle mixer can't and doesn't compare by any means, and more often than not are always on said ear'ole on the scrounge.

I think the holy trinity of trades are as said, plumbers and chippies, sparks are the holy ghost with a handbag with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers in it, but they do have to pay for training/certs etc, so we have to let be in the skilled section but you can train a monkey how to thread wires round an house,
