Hi i have a job to fit 2-off Robocal Caleffi bottle air vents ,,,, Now the only instructions are to be fitted vertical and before filling undo the little black top screw one full turn before filling system which I can understand because with the screw shut off tight,, if I try and blow through it holding it vertical no air will pass out but open the little screw as they say then blow through it and I can hear air passing through ..... Now it does not say what to do with this screw once the system is filled and up and running I would guess I will need to close the screw as water could be coming out but if that's the case how does the Automatic part of this vent work when in normal operation ,, hope this makes sense to someone

Hi Astra, they work like the float in a carburetor, once the chamber is full of water the float inside stops the water by sealing the little hole, So the plastic cap can stay off to allow air to escape as it comes in the system,
consideration 1. If they are going on central heating, 1 will be on the flow and 1 will be on the return, the 1 on the flow will be positive charged and work fine, the one on the return will be negative charged and could draw air in,
the answer, plumberboys answer to this is use check valves under the auto air valves to stop the drawing in problem, or you can alternatively use a manual valve on the return, either way the plastic cap is a dust cap and the auto air valve cannot work with it on,

Hi Have not seen the job yet but its in a bungalow and the customer is complaining that every now and again the customer has to go up in the loft and release air out of two manual air vents then it all starts working again so the customer has been talking to there son-in-law who is a plumber but lives many miles away has advised try fitting 2-off these valves that's why they have asked me to do the Biz............

in that situation Astra, I would fit 2 auto air vents and use PB's idea of using a check valve underneath to stop sucking in
1. turn off the heating and take the pressure off the high bit in the attic, open the manual vents to check its dry, cut off the manual vents and use a compression check valve with the arrow pointing up, then put the auto valves above that, Bingo, fill up and the pipes and they will self vent,
job done,

Hi Tom the pressure coming up the pipe will be strong enough to push through the single check valves then This is only part of the job I have to do for them as they also want me to change every rad valve over to Thermo's so complete drain down change 8-off valves

the pressure is pumped Astra so the flow will have to problem, the return will have to vent when the sytem is off, if its a combi there's no problem, if its gravity, the pump surge will cause enough 'shock' to work the check valve,
If you don't fit the check valves, the return will suck in and cause air locks and you won't gain anything, So you've nothing to lose,

This system was created by a legend.
