Had a job today to fit a lead loc.
Customer was from Tom, he pretended to have a poorly hand because he knew it would be a pain of a job smiley-whacky086 fan shit and passed it my way.(Only messing by the way, I'm grateful for any work anyone passes my way)
Anyroad, as usual for messy jobs, it was late in the day, about 5pm. I've fitted a couple of dozen lead locs in my time, it's not a job I look forward to but it's not difficult.
Has a look and the pipe is battered, there isn't a round section between the floor and the leak, saying it's oval is being kind, customer shows me outside and they've dug the pipe out just outside the back wall and that pipe is nicely round and ideal for a lead loc to seal onto. Problem is, it's only about 350mm deep so not even half way deep enough, that rules me out of working on it outside because of building regs and the fact that I'll be liable and uninsured if I work on it.
So it has to go inside, I'm looking at the pipe and there's a good foot of it before the leak but it's mostly battered so I think I'll cut the lead pipe and try, if it leaks then I'll cut again until I get a seal. It's also 6lb lead pipe so cant trim the pipe down to fit a smaller lead loc because 6lb is the smallest there is.
I asked the customer where the toby is and he tells me it's a shared water main, shared with half the street, probably 10 houses.
So it's gone 5 o'clock and the only way to do the job is turn the streets water supply off for however long it takes, even if I come back another day I'd be in the same boat.
The customer understood which was good, most customers expect you to work miracles.
I told him he needs an old school plumber who is familiar with wiping joints, one like Tom Plumb
