I know it's the middle of summer, but it was a job I got called to yesterday!
It's an air source unit which was on and working when I arrived.
A new tenant had just moved in.
After needlessly checking the normal things I arrive at the heating zone valve which is in the off position in spite of a call for heating from the room stat, the zone valve is not stuck.
I'm struggling with it now.... The tenant suddenly informs me he's worried about bacteria and has been in the main boiler controls and re-set the hot water temperature to 60 degrees in order to kill the bugs.
It now dawns on me what the problem is.
No answers from the plumbers allowed (I've given too much information away)!

you've stumped me crowsfoot, are you saying that, the cust wanted heating and it won't come on ? or its working even thou turned off ?? but anyways a good idea to have a problem page, I think we'll set a board up if it proves popular,

It can't reach the demanded hot water temperature so therefore ignores the heating request?

Well I'd guess that one call is over-riding the other... If it's computerized there is probably a priority stacking, but there will probably be some sort of safety protocol to stop muppets roasting themselves with radiators. ..non-plumber guess work!

Desantnik, I like your IT approach to plumbing problems, " priority stacking" and safety protocol" are terms we never heard of before but. they should now be introduced to the plumbing world as they make perfect sense, qwerty

It can't reach the demanded hot water temperature so therefore ignores the heating request? You got it battle. Most boilers give priority to an hot water demand over heating demand and air source/ ground source units are just the same, however, delivering hot water at 60 degrees is above what these units is capable of. The target hot water temperature just needed lowering to 55 to get the heating to come on. However, I must confess it had me fooled for quite a while and might have even beat me if the tenant hadn't confessed that he had been meddling with the controls. N.B. The control box is hidden by a metal band that you have to unscrew to gain access to it and is also labelled "Do Not Touch" (so he was quite determined no water bound bugs were going to get him) !

Not easy to forget the labelling I have learned writing & debugging code - which is a hair-pulling experience most of the time - but great when you can automate something or create a web-page etc. Just wait until you get boiler controllers with advanced artificial intelligence, once they become self-aware you will have no end of fun trying to correct problems they claim they haven't got!! Time to learn some robot-psychotherapy. It is quite difficult to escape IT jargon in a world where IT is becoming more and more pervasive (re:- IOT). I read an interesting article last week about a robot vacuum cleaner which, having Internet connection and a camera, (so that it can share data to the cloud and hopefully optimise its cleaning routine using the online server), is being viewed by its manufacturers as a source of saleable information. They claim you can opt out of sharing your data, but realistically this means that your vacuum cleaner can film any and everything going on in its place of work. That info is available to anyone who can hack into the cleaner. Surveillance capitalism is here to stay!

I'm looking forward to the invention of the robot plumber Des. Then we can all go home!
