One pipers needed every bit of encouragement possible to make that journey from the main into the radiator, not fitting a lock- shield valve was another thing a lot of plumbers would do on these 1 pipe systems.

yea, the one pipe system was fitted with swept tee's to aid the flow and impossible to balance, You don't see many in houses, mostly skools, hospitals and public buildings, they come from the time of 'back ground' heating, not full blown central heating, If you see one in a house, posh cunts owned it long before central heating was affordable to the common man,,

I can remeber when I first started out, still at college, my mate asked me to move a rad in his bathroom. I was really nervous, but felt I could do it. I lifted the floor boards and looked at pipe work nicely noched into the joist running along what looked like the flow and return.started to work out were pipes are going to go and saw flow going to both ends of the rad.I was well and truly confused! Sat for ages scratching my head! System was on a combi too. I ended up ringing mate ,plumber, explained my situation. He said yer its a one pipe system you daft cunt!!!! You learn well from your mistakes

One thing that as made it's way from the days of one pipe systems is when the custard asks you "which is the first radiator off the boiler"? or "this must be the first radiator off the boiler because it's the first to warm up".
1235678910th radiators only apply to one pipe systems.

I've back piped new radiators for a two pipe system then lifted the boards the following day to find out it's an old one pipe system!
