and when i was a lad, anyone with one of these was posh,,the auto washing machine came out in the 70's and plumbing a new auto washer was a big earner in the day, I used to do 3 or 4 every week, smiley-chores011washing

I plumbed a new machine in couple of months ago to replace the old twin tub . Me mum had one when I was a kid

Believe it or not those top loaders are more popular that automatics in the States.
1/2 turn washing machine taps came out quite a while after the washing machines and plumbers would have to cobble something odd together in order to plumb them in (usually it was hose union bib tap). A 1/2" x 3/4" bush screwed into a FI/Copper then onto a stop tap was another method I'd use in the early days.
The first batch of AWM even had to be bolted down to the floor!
One unfortunate plumber I knew once had one to do on the side and decided to cut the connectors off the WM hose then tried to push them onto copper tubes and secure with jubilee clips this proved unsuccessful and left him out of pocket on that job.

your right there tappy, top loaders are all you'll get over the pond, but they wash,rinse and spin same as our front loaders but, like everything else over there are bigger and use more energy,
