A quick update on my situation. I'd received negative reports on the 35 week evening course so I binned the idea. The gas assessor at the college rang me & I told him straight why I didn't turn up, he told me to go & see him.
I popped in yesterday, he's a nice chap, straight talking. He said as I'm going to be working with a gas man & can do some plumb etc. I can do a 10 week gas course each Friday. He told me the 35 week course which was £3600 just under was for people who'd never touched a pipe etc.
This other course is just under £2k, the ACS assessments are £1100.
After the 10 weeks he'll ask the tutor if the students are ready, if not I can attend each Friday to get better acquainted with what I'm missing, no charge. His 1st time ACS pass rate is 98%.
When I told him my wife worked at the college, he said, don't worry, we'll get you through, just take your time.
So, I spoke with my gasman mate, he's got no issues for signing my tasks off but he said wait until after Christmas to start so I can do more installs. I agree with him but we'll start the portfolio building now.
You now need to do 60 days of various jobs.
It's all good with me.

I should add, he said he tells the tutor to not send anyone for assessments until they can pass. He doesn't want people wasting their money & there's no quota system to meet.
I was pleased to be told the truth.

This college is an FE college, not a private provider too. I did my o levels there is 1986/7.
Still smells the same

It's 12 years since the firm I worked for took fastrack adult plumbers for on the job experience in conjunction with there course, however, just one out of around 30 managed to actually get set on at my firm (and he had connections with the gaffer).
Some of them were sadly "well out of it" and you could see that it wasn't going to work out for them, whilst others were more into it and I certainly do know of fastracked plumbers and gas fitters who have successfully gone into the trade this way.
You seem to be very determined and well connected so I don't think fast tracking will be a problem for you.

thats the difference Rocket, You have the experiance and just need the technical knowledge, ( we all need that) and they show you how to find it, when you can prove you know how to find it, they give sell you a ticket, What they learn can be done in a morning, they take all week and charge accordingly,
