I'll tell you the story of last year when I cut into a live lead main under a sink, I pre warned the lady thinks were going to get wet, It was a warm summers day and it was me against the power of mains water in a confined space under the sink between the plinth and under the sink unit, I was layed face down with arms stretched out fitting a lead to copper fitting on an old water main cos the old tap was siezed open and there was no way of turning the street tap off, some fucker had tarmaced it over and it was lost forever, At the end of it I was absolutly piss wet throughand laid in a kitchen floor with 2 inches of cold water, only plumbers have that amount of fun and get paid for it, bounce

I've cut many live pipes but its all about being prepared, the last one I did was in a friends kitchen his stopcock was seized and no sign of one outside and no room to freeze it, got my parts and tools ready and cut the old one off and snatched a new one on, job done.

Don't try and fight the flow just accept you and your surroundings are going to get wet would be my tip. If you are just swoping the stop tap top tighten the gland on the new top so that it's all solid and that the spindle won't turn is another good tip - always the last resort mind you.... Never try it with hot water getting wet is one thing; getting scalded is another.

We can all laugh at these but when you do it yourself and things go pear shape it's no fun , a good tip for any one attempting this is be prepared with a piece of wood that you have whittled down into a dowel shape point , then if things go wrong and you can not get the connection on you can hammer the wedge of wood into the pipe and take a breather to figure out your next move..... : )
