power flushing would't move that,, I had a job like that where the system really needed re-pipe but offered the owner the choice of trying it a month will car coolant (25 litres) in the system to breakdown he magnetite and fit the Magna Clean to collect the contamination for removal. It worked great, I and had the owner clean the filter every day in fact at the start he was on twice a day. The result was no more water pipe banging or boiler kettelling, cost of coolant £45.

Serious amount of shite in there rocky, one of the worst I've ever seen!
What was the header tank like inside?
Suspect some "pump over's" been happening at sometime for it to get like that.

Yep, the header was nice & steamy! It didn’t have a vent over the top it had a feed in 15 & then another 22mm pipe. My mate had never seen it. It wasn’t too dirty to be honest as other plumber had tried to fix. We out x800 in the inhibitors

Thats called a combined feed and vent rocky, It was very common in the eithies and ninties to overcome the sucking of air into the system,

I've also seen that done tom and like you said it works! However I don't think it is in the approved things of plumbing book ! A more modern thing to do (which I have come across) instead having the 22mm vent/feed is to replace the header tank with an expansion vessel and PRV set up. However, I don't think that this will be in the approved things of plumbing book either!! N.B. I'm currently on with a job that's been pumping over for years, the expansion tanks been shoved right into the apex of the false roof as high as possible so no access to the ball valve without taking the tank out - it's so high!! In the cold weather you can see steam rising from the flashing and roof tiles from outside when the heating is on !! It's gone to the boffins to try and sort it out! I'll let you know if I get it back though.

Basically Rocky no more F & E tank and any of that black sludge in the pipework but I've never seen one where the vent isn't as a swan neck above the F & E tank.
