Following on from Rocket's post which included some points about sealing an open vented system, I'd be interested in learning a bit more about the process. I have a customer in mind who is already planning to change his standard cylinder to an unvented and I think would benefit from losing the F&E tank as well - the project involves a loft conversion.
So, this is really aimed at PB for his advice (please).
Can the expansion vessel go anywhere on the flow or return pipework? The F&E tank is currently at the highest point (as it would be) and it would suit the installation best to put the vessel down on the ground floor near the boiler and new cylinder.
How to calculate the vessel size?
Can the filling loop go anywhere? Best to link to return side?
PRV location? Again, would be easiest near the boiler.
I presume the old vent pipe and cold fill pipe would just be capped as low as possible.
The boiler looks to be fairly new - a Vaillant Eco Tec plus 630. I'm assuming this would be ok to pressurise but I haven't checked with the manufacturer yet.
I take your point about the likelihood of leaks appearing due to the higher pressure and would make the customer aware.
