Thanks lads, I knew there would be some answers to the problem. Had a good look, but can't find an obvious drain off. Has to be on boiler if there is one, because it's the only low point of system. Boiler is piped from above, and there are some narrow side covers down each side of boiler between boiler main casing and wall. The pipes are connected to tappings behind these covers, so wondering if there is a drain on one of them. Surely no one would fit a system without a drain off?
Some great ideas in your answers - must be some material here for a video or two. Tom gets the Heath Robinson award for inventing a drain off with a bath waste. Never would have thought of this in a million years and may just have to use this. System is old and very well used - waster is black as ink, so needs careful draining. Cracking old Olympic boiler though. Must have been going over 35 years and still keeps going.
Will see how I get on - maybe a job for the spring. Thanks again.

If the pump valves are a twat to undo then you can either bung the system or freeze it and cut in a compression tee with a drain off fitted in it, it won't drain as quick as Tom's idea though. We bunged a tank on Friday. It was icy as fuck, my arm was aching, next time it’s polar freeze out as customers expense as the spray is £20 a tin. Brrrrrr..... icy You can't beat the old freeze kit mate, freeze the pipe and not your arm.

See if I can hide the cost in the customer's bill somehow.
